The ancient city of Babylon in Mesopotamia, has the meaning, “confusion.”
Because there were so many idols in Babylon, it was enough to be called the home for gods. Babylon was the corrupt city where adultery conducted in temples diffused among people.
As the various kinds of idolatry performed in Babylon were detestable to God, the Bible calls the group standing against God also as “Babylon.”
So, when we have an understanding regarding idolatry performed in Babylon in the past, we can clearly find out the identity of the spiritual Babylon that now prospers.


메소포타미아의 고대 도시 ‘바벨론’.
‘바벨론’이라는 말에는 ‘혼잡’이라는 뜻이 들어 있다.
고대 바벨론은 신들의 고향이라 할 만큼 많은 우상이 존재했고
신전에서 행해지는 음행이 민간에도 널리 퍼졌던 타락의 도시였다.
하나님께서는 바벨론의 각종 우상 숭배를 가증하게 여기셨으며
우상을 숭배하며 하나님을 대적하는 무리를 ‘바벨론’이라 칭하셨다.
이는 과거 바벨론에서 행한 우상 숭배의 특징을 통해
오늘날 번성하고 있는 ‘영적 바벨론’의 정체를 확실히 알 수 있게 하신 것이다.
