PROS

  • All new power-ups and hazards bring even more variety and depth than before.
  • Cash-for-hats system creates a positive feedback loop; skilled play rewards players with new toys and subsequently more options to make cash.
  • Take the gameplay online in a 4-player race to end of the course or an 8 player local pass-and-play match.

CONS

  • While not game breaking, it feels petty to make the 'last shot' indicator an additional paid-for feature instead of (what is commonly considered) a core one.
  • Soundtrack feels hit and miss; what's catchy at one moment can quickly become irritating in another.

VERDICT

While not as breathtakingly novel as its previous release, Super Stickman Golf 2 doesn't mess with a good thing and builds upon this solid core by adding all new hazards and power-ups, as well as utilizing a rewarding progression system that inspires you to reach greater heights of skill.

When we first encountered Super Stickman Golf by Noodlecake Studios it was hard to keep our joy contained. At its core the game was a by-the-numbers 2D golfing title, however the clever addition of power-ups that required skill to obtain, and added even more depth and gameplay options once obtained made it a solid gold title. Super Stickman Golf 2 has a huge legacy to live up to, and while the core once again remains the same, it's the small details that continue to keep the series running strong.

On loading up your first stage you'll notice all the familiar options - buttons to modify your aim; return the camera to your golfer; activate power-ups; and most important of all, the sliding power-bar. Using these you'll need to navigate the game's twisting mazes filled with water hazards and sand traps, as well as the slightly less than usual moving barriers and sticky patches. Play well enough and you'll remain under-par and maybe even earn a gold medal if your score is low enough.

While your skill can get you through all by itself, there's more fun to be had by sticking yourself to the side of a wall or freezing pools of water so you can continue playing from the hazard. All of the game's power-ups open up all-new pathways, and it's a good thing they do as many of the game's collectables (floating cash notes) are well hidden, with some in 'warp zones' adjacent to your current stage. Collect all 10 from a stage and you'll gain a large bonus; in fact the game regularly offers notes as a reward for completing its many achievements as well as the occasional bonus objective for a particular stage.

The payoff comes in the form of randomly assigned 'hats' from a vending machine - the more you spend, the more likely you'll gain a hat. Given the multitude of cash sources and the relative power of some of the hats (each one imbues your character with a unique effect such as additional power on your shots) it's a sinkhole worth investing in to.

Want more experience and cash? Head online to compete against friends or auto-matched partners in a 'race' mode (first to the hole wins a point) or keep it simple and play against a friend in a head-to-head match up.

As such you'll be rolling in cash and experience, unlocking hats and new golfers alike to tweak the game in subtle, but significant ways. Add in all new obstacles such as portals and magnets, as well as laser-powered or magnetic balls, and the options for mind-bending courses skyrockets.

Super Stickman Golf 2 remains an engaging arcade golfing title thanks to small additions to the gameplay that reward the player with even greater variety and complexity as their skill level increases. It's a smooth and rewarding curve and one we highly recommend experiencing for yourself.
