Leap of Fate has just hit the iOS App Store, and it's a game that deserves some serious attention.
With Deus Ex GO and Mr. Robot:1.51exfiltrati0n hitting the App Store this week, it's understandable that other iOS games might struggle for attention. But we're going to highlight one particular fresh release that you might want to know about.
Leap of Fate doesn't have a big IP attached to it or a major studio behind it, but it's still got some intriguing pedigree.
Steam punk
It started out life on Steam as an indie PC game, where it's attracted a great deal of word-of-mouth praise. Now it's made its way over to iOS, where it looks set to impress a whole new crowd.
Leap of Fate is a twin-stick shooter with a roguelike structure - that is, the levels are randomly generated, and once you die that's it for your run - though you can unlock permanent upgrades that will improve your chances in future attempts.
You're cast as one of four technomages in a cyberpunk New York City. This makes for a heady combination of fantasy and sci-fi elements, as engage swarms of enemies in gun and magic-based combat.
Core to this combat is your shadow walk move, which enables you to warp instantly to a different nearby location. This serves to get you out of sticky corners, and can also be used as an offensive tool depending on the character you choose.
Take a leap
While the action is fast and frantic, there's an RPG-lite upgrade system at play that can help you customise your technomage. Intriguingly, these skill trees are randomly generated at the start of each play through, which promises a welcome dose of variety.
We have yet to put Leap of Fate through its paces on iOS, but it's all shaping up very nicely indeed, and the developer claims that the game sports "the best action controls on mobile".
Leap of Fate is available to buy on the iOS App Store now for £2.99. As you might expect given its origins, it's quite a technically demanding game. As such, you'll need the minimum of an iPad 4, iPad mini 2, or iPhone 5S to run it.
