Want to be a King or Queen? Try these 5 great kingdom simulators

I don't know about you, but when I was a kid I always thought being a royal would be amazing. You'd have all the money in the world, people - for some reason - loved you, and you'd never have to work a day in your life.

I still think it'd be pretty awesome.

Unfortunately, I fear it's a little too late for me now, unless I go to St Andrews uni and happen to get off with a minor Princess.

Instead, I'll stick to playing these five great mobile kingdom simulators. Yay!

Reigns

Reigns is sort of like being a monarch in a world where every interaction you have is seen through the lens of Tinder.

You swipe left or right to say yes or no to various people and their suggestions. Want to build a hospital? Swipe. Want to donate money to the farmers? Swipe? Want to play fetch with your dog? Swipe!

The mysterious story pans out not only over the course of your tenure, but also over your descendants' reigns - much like Rogue Legacy, you play through your offspring's lives, too.

It's engrossing, and - much like Tinder itself - addictive. Try it and never look back.

My Majesty

Okay, I'm going to say this straight off: don't play My Majesty. It's a poor imitation of Reigns, without the interesting Tinder-like interface, and sans all the character and humour. Even the predicaments presented to you are boring.

In short, you shouldn't play My Majesty. Unless you want to imagine being a poor excuse for a royal, turning up to school re-openings like Prince Edward or something.

Kingdom Rush Origins

As the prequel to Kingdom Rush, Origins comes from a strong lineage - no supermarket ribbon cutting here.

Instead, it's a tower defence game, so as ruler of the kingdom it's down to you to decide where all the castles and archers and such like go. You're at war, alongside your people - what could be more royal than that?

Trivia Crack Kingdoms

Trivia Crack Kingdoms is the sequel to - you'll never guess it - Trivia Crack! I know, I'd have never guessed either.

This second installment in the franchise is basically the same as its predecessor, but with more #Brands™, and this time all the characters have little crowns on their head, which is really cute.

It does still sound like a pretty hardcore drug, though. So actual monarchs will probably love it.

Stronghold Kingdoms

Stronghold Kingdoms isn't actually out on mobile yet. PC users have been enjoying it for years, but there's not much longer to wait, mobile players!

Stronghold Kingdoms is an MMO, meaning everyone around you is also the ruler of their own little kingdom. It's your task to grow yours and shrink theirs.

The best bit is the fact that it's overlaid onto the real world, so while you might have a globe-spanning empire, your castle is still in Slough, mate.
