Mafia III has just come out on consoles. I’m only telling you this because this part of the article is an introduction to the themes we’re going to be dealing with later on. I was pretty sure you already knew that Mafia III was out on consoles, you’re smart you are.
Anyway, Mafia III isn’t out on mobile. Well, there’s a free to play RPG version but I’m not counting that because, well who counts things like that? No one cool, that’s for sure. And you and me? We’re super cool.
So I thought I’d make you a list of games that are a bit like Mafia III that you CAN play on your phone or tablet. Because that just seemed like a good idea. Let’s just get on with this shall we? Time is precious after all.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Yeah sure, there are some proper 3D GTA games on mobile, and if you want you can go and play them to your heart’s content. But I have a super soft spot for Chinatown Wars. It harks back to the olden days of GTA, but puts a modern twist on things.
And it’s perfect for gaming on the go, since that was what it was created for. There’s a great story, loads of interesting characters, and just a whole load of crime to get out there and do. So get out there and do it.
Max Payne
Okay we have to have some sort of old console game with shooting and grittiness on here, so I’ve gone for Max Payne. Partly for the gunplay, but mainly for the gurning faces of all the characters. Hahahahaha, look at them gurn.
Anyway, Max Payne is great, it does bullet-time pretty well, and while it doesn’t work brilliantly on mobile, there’s still loads of drugs and guns and hard-bitten detectives for you to play around with. Sounds fun, right?
The Wolf Among Us
Look, there might not be much action in The Wolf Among Us, but there is a super interesting story. And I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a story in Mafia III as well, at least that’s what the adverts have lead me to believe.
Yes, it might be a bit fairytale, but quite frankly I don’t care. It’s still gritty and it’s still difficult sometimes. It might not be Telltale’s best work, but it’s still one of the best narrative experiences on the App Store. So grab it and sink your teeth into some noir. Werewolf noir.
Modern Combat 5: Blackout
Gameloft specialises in big silly console experiences. And that’s pretty much exactly what Modern Combat 5 is. It’s gibberish with explosions and guns and proper manly men doing proper manly murdering.
It’s on this list because it’s got shooting in it and Mafia III has shooting in it. And I expect it has explosions in it as well, and Modern Combat 5 full on loves explosions. Like it has a real thing for explosions, if you know what I mean.
