In the first of a new series of features, we’re going to have a look at the work of a single developer on the App Store. But rather than doing it in a nice way, we’re going to have a right big fight.
This time around we’re looking at Supercell, and ranking its iOS games from the worst to the best. Who knows, you might even be surprised by the conclusions that we reach when we get to the end of the article.
All of the games here are good, but some of them are just more gooderer than the others. If you disagree with us, well feel free to have a right old slanging match in the comments. Call us idiots, say that we smell bad like poop. Just say anything, I’m so lonely.
4 - Hay Day
Supercell likes to say that Hay Day is the best farming game on mobile. Well, that might be the case, but it’s definitely the worst of the developer’s games on mobile. Depending how you look at it, that’s probably a good or a bad thing.
This one sees you trying to build up your farm, planting crops, harvesting crops, milking cows, all the sort of things you’d expect from a game about farming. It’s casual, it’s cute, and everything else Supercell has made is better than it.
3 - Clash of Clans
Oh sure, this one might be the jewel in the dev’s crown, and it makes more money than the GDP of some small countries. But despite all the shine and gew gaws, it’s starting to look a little jaded compared to other games in the genre.
It might be the most famous game on the list, but in terms of gameplay it’s been superceded a number of times over the years. In fact, it’s been superceded by the next game on this list, which Supercell made.
2 - Boom Beach
Boom Beach takes the template of Clash of Clans and then throws it around a bit. The end result is a smarter, more polished resource management game with a far more interesting style.
It shows Supercell growing as a developer, unafraid to play around with the shapes that it had laid down with its earlier work to create something even better. Which leads us to…
1 - Clash Royale
This is the undisputed jewel in the Supercell crown. It’s a wonderful reinvention of the mobile MOBA, full of eSports possibilities, and with the sort of compulsion loop that’s guaranteed to wrap its way around your throat.
It’s one of those rare games that manages to appeal across the hardcore, midcore, and casual mobile gamers. And for that alone it deserves its spot high atop this list. Even though it’s at the bottom. You know what I mean.
