Oh hi there, Thursday. Where have you been hiding? And what have you been doing while you’ve been hiding there? Oh god Thursday, why are you covered in blood? Oh no, no Thursday put down the axe.
Okay, while I deal with this it’s probably time for a Thursday find. This week’s is a game that owes a lot to the past and a lot to the present. And probably a lot to the future. Although I’ve not been there so I can’t be completely sure.
But if you like endless runners and retro futurism then this could well be the sort of game that makes you go “ooooh, that combines two of my interests.” Now where was I? Oh yeah, the axe. THURSDAY, don’t make me hurt you!
Hovercrash
Hovercrash is what would happen if WipeOut had been created a year ago by the developers of Subway Surfers after watching Tron on repeat for about 18 hours. If that hasn’t piqued your interest then I don’t have much else to offer.
I’m gonna offer some more stuff anyway though, because Hovercrash does too. Firstly it offers more control than your usual endless runner. You’re not just swiping between lanes, you’re free to weave through the track.
And it offers something else too. There’s a risk and reward system built into the game. Lift your finger off the screen and your multiplier goes up faster. But you’re obviously in a far worse position to deal with any obstacles
There are a lot of obstacles too. I mean to start off with you’re going to be smashing into them a lot. Like just all of the time. But then you start to get the hang of things, and you’ll find yourself smashing into them slightly less.
It might not be the most original game on the App Store, but Hovercrash shows off the power of iteration. With a few interesting tweaks here and there, it’s created something that you’re going to enjoy getting your fingers into.
Just be ready to put some work in. This might be an endless runner, but it’s the sort of endless runner that’s going to chew you up, spit you out, and then chew you up and spit you out all over again.
