The AppSpy retrospective - The 3 best games of July 2016

By , on December 20, 2016

Well we’re more than halfway through our look back at the year now. We’ve smashed out 18 brilliant games that you might not even remember came out this year. Now let’s get to the other 18.

There was a game that came out in July this year that you probably do remember. It was only one of the biggest releases of the entire year. It was about little monsters running around and, well we’ll get to that.

Some other pretty excellent mobile games came out in July too. Here’s a list of them that you can read and enjoy and then forget or act upon. The choice really is yours.

Pokemon GO

Oh yeah, that game. The game that made everyone congregate in strange places to try and collect weird little creatures. The game that launched a whole bunch of searches on Google. The game that people are still playing right now.

Pokemon GO basically defined the mobile gaming landscape for the second half of the year. Or at least it did until a certain plumber made his entrance in December. But we’ll get to that later.

This was a game that turned a ridiculous amount of people who would never play a game into avid consumers of digital entertainment. And I think someone got stuck in a cave playing it as well.

Severed

It might have been a port of an older Vita game, but Severed felt like it found its home on the App Store. It’s a slicey swipey adventure game and it’s got its own beautiful art style to boot.

From the dev behind Guacamelee, this one has been a bit of a sleeper hit on mobile. Mainly because it plays incredibly, and has more meat on its bones than a good deal of the experiences you’ll find on the App Store.

In short, it’s a really enjoyable romp that’s about slashing, thinking, and hacking your way through a series of awesome looking bosses. And beating them to death with their own limbs.

Dead Venture

Oh no another zombie game. But this one’s actually a lot more interesting than you might expect. Drive a car around, kill the undead, and finish a bunch of missions.

There’s a lovely beat to the play here that’ll keep you bouncing back into the fray to try and get a better score or complete a tricky challenge.

It might not be super original, but as zombie games featuring cars, guns, and good humour go, this one is probably the standout title of the year.
