Welcome back Wednesday wanderers, to the AppSpy article that makes sure that you’re getting the most out of the pennies you scrimp and save to spend on portable digital entertainment.
And the sales section of the App Store is really kicking 2017 off with a bang. Can you kick things off with a bang? I don’t know, and quite frankly I don’t care, because I’m not going back and deleting that.
So without further ado, or maybe with just a little extra ado, here are the five best games that are going dirt cheap on the App Store right this second.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier
The first episode of Telltale’s new zombie horror adventure only came out a couple of weeks ago, but the second one has just hit as well. And to celebrate you can now grab episode one for nothing at all.
The game continues the tragic, gritty, and occasionally horrifying tale of Clementine. We’ve moved on a few years, but the zombie apocalypse is still going on, and there are still plenty of shades-of-grey choices to make.
1979 Revolution
This was one of my favourite games of last year. A really important piece of digital entertainment that tells some truly harrowing stories surrounding the Iranian revolution. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.
That being said, it’s the sort of game that everyone should play. And right now you can grab it for nothing at all. So go and do that and discover a game that walks you through some of the darkest times in modern history.
Progress to 100
There’s just something wonderful about Progress to 100. It’s a puzzle game that makes use of the various input methods of the iPhone or iPad. You’re tilting, you’re clapping, you’re swiping, you’re tapping. Hey, that rhymes.
This is definitely one you’re going to want to have friends around you to play. It’s fun on your own, but when there’s a bunch of people shouting out ideas the game really springs to life in some unexpected ways.

Spacecom
A game about conquering the universe using triangles. And not just any triangles, three different kinds of triangles. In spite of its slightly clunky graphics and uninspiring set-up, you’ll actually find a lot of depth here.
It’s a grand strategy game played out in mobile-sized bites of play. And if you want to sink your teeth into it a little deeper, it’s accommodating to a more wholesome bite. Definitely one to while away a good few winter hours with.

This War of Mine
I’m not entirely sure why, but the first week of January seems to be all about harrowing games going for cheap. And this one might be the finest of them all. It’s war, but viewed from the side that doesn’t have guns or bombs, just the will to survive.
Scavenge for goods, find other survivors, and try and keep your group alive when infection, exhaustion, and starvation set in. If you’ve not played this one yet, then you owe it to yourself to give it a go.
