In this week’s Tuesday best-of, we’re going to have a look at puzzling RPGs. Mainly because a new one came out last week in the shape of WWE: Champions. It’s pretty good, but I don’t think it’s as good as these three.
There’s some traditional ones here, some less traditional ones, and, well that’s sort of it. I mean there’s only three entries on the list, I’m not a miracle worker.
Anyway, here they are in all their matching glory. If you like the look or sound of them, then wander off to the App Store and get them grabbed. I don’t think you’re going to be disappointed.
Marvel Puzzle Quest
There’s just something about Puzzle Quest that makes you feel like you’re playing something special. Throw in some of Marvel’s mightiest heroes and you’re left with a surprisingly engaging blend.
Sure, it’s just a match-stuff puzzler, but it’s so shiny, so well put together, and so chock full of action, that it’s almost churlish to dismiss it just because of its genre.
It’s sharp, it’s smart, and it’s a wonderful antidote to the more saccharine Candy-flavoured puzzlers that usually dominate the top end of the App Store.

You Must Build A Boat
The first thing you’ll notice about You Must Build A Boat is just how different it looks from the other games on the list. There’s no glitz or glamour, there’s just beautiful pixel art.
The second thing you’ll notice is that it’s sort of an endless runner. The items you match are used by a character sprinting along the top of the screen.
Oh, and you’re building a boat. There’s some real depth here, and it’s great to play a game that messes around with the shape of the genre with such confidence.

Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
This one does things a little differently. Rather than your matches representing your actions, here they are your actions. You’re literally matching your units in a variation of Tetris.
And it works brilliantly. If you only ever play one puzzling RPG then this should definitely be it. It’s an outstanding piece of work, and while it’s a port it feels like it’s always been home on mobile.
There’s a spectacular depth here, and an awful lot of strategy too. It’s premium as well, and I can safely say that if you only download one game on this list, it should definitely be this one.
