Whatever your stance on 'Room Escape' games, you have to admit that they're seriously fun and satisfying when things go right.
In a way they make you feel like a genius or special agent/detective when you're piecing together clues and figuring out the puzzles. Sure, some don't allow you much freedom and come off a little amateurish, but there are some cracking ones out there you've simply got to play.
Hopefully you can see where this is going 'cos these five 'Room Escape'-style games are a good investment. They may cost a pretty penny, but the payoff is well worth it.
The Room – download on iOS
Shock horror, I know. If you're a mobile gamer and haven't played any of The Room series yet, you really need to get a wriggle on.
As well as one of the finest looking mobile games on the market, The Room immerses you in a fantastic mystery with an equally engaging story. After being called in to aid an old friend, you need to solve layers upon layers of carefully crafted puzzles.
Each of its following titles relate to the last without repeating challenges and its controls, especially on iPad, are buttery smooth and intuitive.
Agent A – download on iOS
Speaking of feeling like a special agent, Agent A essentially puts you in the shoes of one. After she takes down a series of agents, you need to follow an enemy spy called Ruby La Rouge and capture her.
The problem is, who is stalking who? Once you've infiltrated her hideout, you need to rely on all of your problem-solving skills and logical strengths to make it out alive. Told in five parts, the fifth and final chapter has yet to be released.
You'll have a blast exploring all of the beautiful environments, getting into the 60s-style décor, keeping an eye on anything out of the ordinary, and much more.
The House of Da Vinci – download on iOS
Though The House of Da Vinci is a bit TOO similar to The Room for a lot of people's liking, it does a bang-up job across its puzzles and design.
Honestly, this is a really striking game. Playing as Da Vinci's apprentice, you have to rely on your own problem-solving skills and understanding of your master, Leonardo, to figure out where why he's disappeared and where he's gone.
You'll explore rooms full of authentic designs and gorgeous 16th century architecture as you go, and have to knuckle down deep to figure out the many mechanisms hiding in his workshop.
Returner 77 – download on iOS
If you're sick of down-to-earth mysteries, perhaps you'll enjoy a big ol' dose of Sci-Fi instead with Returner 77.
Mankind is on the brink of extinction and the only way to save it is by surviving the war and maybe by taking down some alien scum afterwards. As one of the 77 survivors chosen for the mission, you need to explore an alien spaceship which might hold the key to rebuilding humanity.
Not only another of the most beautiful puzzlers on the market, this'll keep you well engaged as you fiddle about with awesome puzzles, explore striking environments, and fix alien technology.
The Eyes of Ara – download on iOS
As one of the more recent releases, in The Eyes of Ara you need to explore an ancient castle to discover the origin of a mysterious signal that's suddenly started broadcasting. Something inside the old structure has awoken, but what?
You'll experience rooms full of old treasures, tricky puzzles, secret vaults, and more as you work through the castle. The townspeople say there's something strange going on, what with strange dreams, raging storms, and ghostly lights flitting about.
I guess there's only one way to find out. Not only does it look fantastic, there's a compelling story running its course as you play, and works great on both iPhone and iPad.
