The top 10 iPhone and iPad games of 2018: No 4 - The Room: Old Sins

Yesterday we told you what we thought the fifth best iPhone and iPad game of 2018 was. We've already told you about games 10-6 on our list, and you can read all about them by clicking this link right here.

Now it's time for number 4 in our list. It's a gloomy return to screen-poking that's filled with horror, spooks, and a sense of unease, and it's bloody brilliant. Of course there's a chance you won't think that, so do let us know in the comments if you think we've got this one wrong.

The Room: Old Sins

The fourth game in The Room series does away with things like numbers. It's a stand-alone story set in the same unnerving Victorian universe, and it's all about poking and prodding a doll's house to find the secrets within. Some of the puzzles here rank among the finest we've seen from the franchise, and this fourth game really cements the fact that Fireproof knows exactly what it's doing when it comes to spooks and head-scratches.

The game isn't just spooky though - it deals with important things like obsession, drive, and the cost of playing god. All of which means it's earned its spot just outside the top three games of 2018. It's dark and mysterious for sure, and there are a few sections here where you're more than likely to get spooked out - but The Room games have never been blunt instruments. Where other games might lead with jump scares and think that was enough, this one builds up a tangible sense of wrongness.

It might not reinvent The Room wheel, but it does manage to make the series feel fresh again. Get it, turn off the lights, and get ready for the most atmospheric few hours of mobile gaming that 2018 had to offer.
