It's safe to say that Square Enix has made a lot of JRPGs. They've also put plenty of them on the App Store.
Which - while great for fans of the genre - does mean that lesser known or brand new JRPGs get a bit lost amongst them.
That's why I've made this list. All of these games are excellent JRPGs in their own right and shouldn't be ignored simply because they don't have the stamp of JRPG approval that being published by Square Enix comes with.
1. Symphony of the Origin - It's a safe bet that if you love JRPGs and you own an iOS device you've already played a Kemco game. Symphony of the Origin is one of their best and a great place to start for those who've yet to try them.
2. Cthulhu Saves the World - An indie darling that originally launched on PC, Cthulhu Saves the World was later ported to iOS as the full PC version. It's a bit of a parody of the JRPG genre as a whole but, like all good parodies, it manages to actually be a really decent example of its source material.
3. Dragon Fantasy - Harkening back to the era of the original " target="_blank">Final Fantasy, Dragon Fantasy looks and plays like it was genuinely made during that time. This list doesn't contain a lot of modern RPGs made to look like vintage RPGs but if it did, I'd still bet that this one would be somewhere near the top of the pile.
4. Battleheart - Though it doesn't particularly look like a JRPG, drawing its visual inspirations from comic books as oppose to anime, Battleheart certainly plays like one. A sequel took it down the action-RPG road but the original appeals more to the JRPG crowd with its party-based combat system.
5. Zenonia - You're forgiven if your first thought upon playing Zenonia is that it reminds you of The Legend of Zelda. However, it contains plenty of stats and anime-influenced visuals which both favour the JRPG crowd.
6. Vay - An actual classic originally released on the Sega CD, Vay was released on iOS in 2008 - fourteen years after its original launch. However, it wasn't just a simple port. A new voice cast and extra content was added to the game that didn't make it into the original release.
7. Phantasy Star - SEGA's Phantasy Star is to Star Wars what Square Enix's Final Fantasy is to Lord of The Rings. Or, in other words, one's an epic sci-fi JRPG and the other is an epic fantasy JRPG. Either way, quite a few Phantasy Star games have made it onto the App Store. Below is a trailer for the latest, which takes the series down the MMOJRPG route.
8. Terra Battle - This entry is a tad sneaky. Mistwalker was founded by the guy who made Final Fantasy, you see. It can't not be on the list, though, because it's a really good mobile JRPG, and it's very clear that this one was built with mobile in mind from the very get go.
