The top 10 Action RPGs that are yet to make it onto mobile

By , on January 31, 2015

Action RPGs have found a reasonably good home on mobile. We have Dungeon HunterKingsroad, and Bastion which all have deft touch controls, expansive worlds to explore, and, most importantly, loot. Lots of loot.

However, mobile definitely needs more of the classic entries in the genre, so I've compiled a list of the 10 best action RPGs that could conceivably come to mobile.

1. Diablo II - Arguably the most important action RPG of all time, the Diablo franchise instilled in a lot of gamers an unhealthy addiction to loot  that still remains today. Diablo II is the highlight of the franchise so far.

2. Torchlight II - If Diablo is the franchise that brought the action RPG into the public consciousness, Torchlight is the franchise that revived it. The art style is very different but everything else is pure Diablo - in a good way. Torchlight II brought multiplayer and a more open world to the franchise.

3. Divine Divinity - Out of all of the games on this list, Divine Divinity is the one I most want to see come to mobile. The world is just so unique and engrossing and it's one of the few action RPG franchises that's managed to continually churn out well-received sequels.

4. Dungeon Siege - I always argue that clicky PC games work well on mobile because a click is essentially a tap. Dungeon Siege was very clicky and had a party management system that verged on the strategic. Just make sure to ignore any of the sequels past Dungeon Siege II.

5. Fable - The world of Albion is the real star of the Fable franchise. It's a bit Monty Python, a bit Grimm's Fairy Tales, and a lot Peter Molyneux. The original Fable is still the best by far but I doubt it will ever make it onto mobile due to it being a Microsoft property.

6. Titan Quest - The unique draw about Titan Quest is its revisiting of ancient civilisations and use of mythology. It's also a very good action RPG and is suitably clicky.

7. Fate Torchlight was the spiritual successor to Fate and brought to us by the same developer so it has a good pedigree. However, it was a lot more casual-centric which could appeal to younger mobile gamers or those intimidated by the action RPG.

8. Sacred 2: Fallen Angel - As a franchise, Sacred was always better when it focused on the RPG first and the action second. Sacred is all about world exploration and multiplayer so it brings something a little different to the action RPG table.

9. Deathspank - All about the humour is Deathspank, which is good because action RPGs are generably about beating things to a bloody pulp and that's about it really. Also: Ron Gilbert.

10. Path of Exile - The only action RPG on this list that's also an MMORPG, Path of Exile would fit nicely on mobile. Pocket Legends and Arcane Legends proved that there's a market for it - especially a high profile, excellent action MMORPG like Path of Exile.
