Layton: Diabolical Box in HD, the remastered version of DS classic Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, has just now popped up on the App Store and Google Play.
Diabolical Box originally released all the way back in 2007. It was the second entry in the beloved Professor Layton series, following on from Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village. They were acclaimed shots of story-driven puzzling that hailed from Japanese developer and publisher Level-5.
They’ve actually held up really quite well thanks to their simple anime-style visuals and accessible logic-based puzzles. They all follow Layton and his pal Luke on their mystery-solving adventures – think a more relaxed Holmes and a younger, somewhat precocious Watson.
I suppose they quite closely resemble point and click adventure games, though the focus is usually placed on the dozens of puzzles over all else. That’s not to say that the characters and story won’t also hook you, but it’s best to go in expecting a puzzler.
Here in the UK, the sequel is still known as Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box. Everywhere else (besides Australia, I believe), it was called Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. A bit confusing, I know, but also somewhat normal in video game localizations.
From what I can tell, this updated version doesn’t include any new content, so it’s maybe only suitable for new players or those whose DS has long since packed in. You can find it over on the App Store and Google Play for the pretty reasonable price of £9.99.
