The Tree is a digital adaptation of the board game of the same name created by Simon Harvard, and it’s out now on iOS and Android as a paid game.
It’s a strategy game that the whole family can enjoy, where each person plays as a guardian spirit protecting a magical tree. There’s four different trees in the game, each one inspired by popular folklore from around the world: Brocéliandre forest, Native Americans, Vikings and Medieval Japan.
Every player has a series of cards and guardian spirits they can play, which’ll either help their own tree grow or slow the progress of the other trees. According to developers Touched by Grace and Plug In Digital, it is essential to your success that you use each card at the correct time. You can play on your own solo against AI players, or instead bring your friends in and utilise the game’s 2-4 person multiplayer support.
Here’s a trailer to check out if you want to see more of the gameplay and get a look at the visual style The Tree is going for. As you can see, it’s going for a storybook art style that wouldn’t be too out of place appearing in a Beatrix Potter book. Frankly, it’s quite a lovely sight to behold.
In addition to its existence as a digital board game, it’s also aiming to raise the awareness in both young and adult players of the need to protect our forests, so it’s important for a game to be creating conversations like this for children to learn more about as they grow older.
If you’re interested in checking this out, you can download The Tree from the iOS App Store or Google Play for Android. It’s a paid title which costs $4.99. There's also a Steam version available for the PC lot out there.
