PikPok has released Clusterduck for iOS and Android devices. It’s a rather cute game where you breed and collect a variety of bizarre and quirky ducks.

The best way to describe it would be a cross between a creature collection game, like Pokémon, and a game that lets you customise how a species evolves, like Spore. Over the course of the game you breed some seriously strange types of duck, and the more you hatch the more likely they mutate into a nightmarish version of a duck.

You might be familiar with PikPok from its previous mobile game, Flick Kick Football, which was released on iOS and Android. The concept for Clusterduck is rather wacky, but it began as a small project created during one of PikPok’s internal game jams.

There are over 218 trillion possible combinations for the breeds of duck you can create, according to PikPok, with 252 unique quack sound effects. Some of these combos include one having a sword for a head, while another may get horse hooves for wings. The mutations come in a hierarchy of rarities, which include common, rare, epic and legendary items possible of being generated. There is, however, only a limited number of space for your ducks to be stored. Some of them must be sacrificed by being thrown into a mysterious hole if you want to keep breeding new ones.

That’s a lot to keep track of, so Clusterduck also includes an in-game ‘Ducktionary’ that lets you view the various duck bodies, wings and heads you’ve collected so far. The art in particular is very lovely, having been created by Matthew Wills, who also worked on the Swords webcomic.

You can download Clusterduck from the iOS App Store or Google Play for Android. You can play it for free, but there’s a $0.99 purchase option which’ll remove the adverts.
