Inkle Studios, creators of the popular 80 Days and Heaven’s Vault games, announced and launched a new detective mystery game called Overboard! yesterday. The game is out now for iOS devices as well as on PC and Nintendo Switch.
The game is set in the thirties on a ship about eight hours away from docking in New York. A murder has been committed aboard the SS Hook, and the main problem is youdunnit. You must avoid detection for long enough to get back ashore.
Overboard! is intended to be highly replayable. You use cunning, coercion and charisma to deflect blame away from you onto other people, hopefully getting someone else to take the fall. This is achieved by using clues, secrets and suspects to your advantage.
This could involve you blackmailing another individual, drugging a witness to skew their recollection of the event, or even murdering a rival. The idea behind the game is constantly think up new ways to lie your way out of suspicion, with there being so many different outcomes to each scenario that keeps you coming back to it.
Overboard! was created by Inkle in less than four months. The studio had previously created 80 Days and Heaven’s Vault. The former in particular was a very popular visual novel for iOS devices, adapting the classic Jules Verne novel Around the World in Eighty Days as an interactive story.
In particular, Overboard! feels like a natural evolution of that game, where you can go where you want, when you want, and say what you want to advance the story. Other characters have the same freedom, moving and acting independent of your actions as well as remembering everything they see and hear.
You can download Overboard! now from the iOS App Store where it is a paid title that costs $5.99.
