Square Enix has announced the release dates for the first three Final Fantasy games coming in the Pixel Remaster collection. The games will be hitting iOS and Android stores as well as on Steam on 28th July.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters were announced at E3 during the Square Enix Presents livestream. They’re basically remastered versions of classic 2D Final Fantasy games with new quality of life updates and sharper graphics.

Despite the small changes, these games will stay true to the originals. Kazuki Shibuya, one of the original artists for the series, is returning to oversee development on the art. She’ll be working on new 2D character sprites and background graphics that look fresher for 2021 screens but also respect the original quality of their designs.

Meanwhile, composer Nobuo Uematsu is also returning to the series with new beautifully rearranged soundtracks.

“We are rearranging all the music tracks this time,” Uematsu said. “One of the first ideas I had was to make sure to stay faithful to the originals, but of course I couldn’t just leave it in the original 3-tone sound, so they have been built up into full-scale tracks. I have made sure that the original atmosphere has been retained and each can be listened to as separate music pieces, so that fans can enjoy.”

The Pixel Remaster games will include improved gameplay too, such as auto-battle options and support for both controller and touch controls. It also has a modernised user interface, though in my opinion the text is a little small for my liking.

There will also be new features such as bestiary, an art gallery, music player and the ability to save at any point in the game.

You can’t view the mobile store pages for the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series but you can keep an eye on the Steam bundle here. Final Fantasy I, II and III will release on iOS and Android on 28th July.
