Angry Birds the Movie is on the way. Yeah, you read that right. A feature length, animated movie starring everyone's favourite mute avians is set to hit cinemas in 2016, after Sony bought the rights to Rovio's bird flinging mobile games.
According to Gamespot, Iron Man producer David Maisel is attached to the film as executive producer, and John Cohen, whose credits include Despicable Me, is on board as a producer.
Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton had the following to say about the deal:
"We're thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together."
So it looks like the 2016 film is just the tip of the iceberge. Maybe Angry Birds will turn into a franchise, with an epic story spanning generations of different birds as they try and get their eggs back from he dastardly pigs.
Maybe not. But we can assure you we'll be first in line when tickets go on sale in three years time. Honest.
