Rovio has released a teaser image promoting a brand new Angry Birds game, complete with a collection of new characters.

The image, which was posted on the official Angry Birds Twitter feed, shows the outline of six never-before-seen birds. The accompanying message reads: "Big adventure with new birds coming soon!"

Until recently, Rovio had kept the physics-puzzler gameplay of the Angry Birds franchise true to its origins. Whether the action was set in a on a beach, in space, or in a galaxy far, far away, it always involved pinging birds at pigs with a simple gesture.

However, the most recent Angry Birds game, a free-to-play kart racer called Angry Birds Go!, broke free of the establish feather-flinging mould.

The sketchy nature of the characters in the new image (above) - which only shows the birds in silhouette - could suggest a stylistic depature for the series.

We're also tantalised by the use of the the world 'adventure' in the announcement. Could there be an Angry Birds RPG on the way?

When we know more, so will you.
