VERDICT

Cheese Collect is unmistakeably an admirable second entry for independent developer Koh Jing Yu. His graphics remain fairly rough, but the puzzles are fun and there's definitely some replay value here. Worth a look for younger puzzle fans.

Cheese Collect by Koh Jing Yu is an arcade puzzle game that pits you (the mouse) against your nemesis (the wily cat) as he moves his remote-control cheese around a minefield of traps. Despite the fairly uninspired name, Cheese Collect manages to be a surprisingly fun - if somewhat flawed - App for the iPhone.

The interface is kept fairly simple with each turn allowing you to move your mouse in one of eight directions (up/down, left/right and diagonals). The touch controls here are a bit of a let down and can either simply refuse to acknowledge a touch or select an incorrect option entirely. It's not a common problem, but it can cause an otherwise great run to end too soon.

At first the visuals seems somewhat rudimentary, but after playing the game it's clear that they're aimed towards a much younger audience. As such the puzzles are relatively simple and even the tutorial campaign feels a bit tardy, cutting off without explaining what you're learning and instead teaching by example. You will be subject to a bit of random luck in trying to obtain a high score (which you can save or Twitter), but there's rarely a situation that isn't solvable.

.It may not be the best puzzle game available on the iPhone, nor a show-stopper in terms of graphics, but Cheese Collect is still an interesting puzzle game. The App aims to be friendly to all ages, but misses the mark somewhat and is definitely a puzzle game for younger audiences. A great little game to keep the kids occupied.
