First Person Shooters have had a bit of a shaky start on the iPhone. It seems no one can create a control scheme that suits the fast, frenetic action of the genre. Doom Resurrection has figured out one solution to the problem, have the game move your character for you, meaning that all the player has to worry about is destroying whatever is in their path.
You are a marine, in a research base on Mars. An experiment has gone wrong and suddenly the complex is overrun by zombies and demons, and you need to fight your way out. Since moving is handled automatically, you tilt the iPhone to aim your crosshairs and press a button on screen to fire your gun. You can also press buttons to reload, take cover, dodge, and change weapons. As you progress through the levels, you come across new weapons to use, and destroying crates and tapping on screen picks up health and ammo.
The visuals of the game seem to be a downgraded version of one of id's 3d engines and it looks really good for the iPhone. Sound has some nice stereo effects such as fireballs whizzing past you on one side or the other coming out of the appropriate speaker. Aside from the main story mode, there is a free play mode, and various challenges.
Doom Resurrection is an example of the FPS done right on the iPhone. Removing movement frees the player up to just focus on shooting enemies, and while the game is a little slow paced, there's plenty of action. If you're looking for a good shooting game, this one is worth your time.
