It's easy to automatically get into a bad mood when faced with "yet another" castle defense style game, but it's nice to be surprised once in a while by a developer. Coast Defense by Elene Kim manages to breathe some life in to a genre that has suffered for its clones, which automatically makes this a game worth checking out.
Coast Defense uses a combination of tilting to pan the screen, dragging a reticule to aim your shots on incoming troops and a trigger in the bottom corner. The response and accuracy of aiming and firing is perfect and the weapon switch buttons are easy to use and handy to reload a weapon quickly. The tilting to pan can be a bit frustrating if you overshoot your mark, but as levels progress you'll find less direct finesse is required against the incoming hordes.
Coast Defense is set in a WW2 style beach invasion scenario (though no sides are strictly named) and the art style is fairly generic in its representation of the era (lots of brown and green, with explosions being fairly washed out too). The interface itself is informative and easy to use and if you want to relax even further it's possible to replace the background music with your own from iTunes.
By combining FPS shooting with the best of castle defense games, Coast Defense remains challenging to the end. The only real complaint is how odd it feels to use a "nuke" against a beach invasion (not to mention where so many trucks come from), but they all serve the greater good: a fun game.
