The duck-shoot is a classic arcade staple, one that evolved to using light-guns and complex animatronic vistas that rewarded your patience and accuracy with whacky antics. Crazy Chicken Deluxe - Grouse Hunting by Acmee is an iPhone light-gun shooter that rewards your ability to think laterally and shoot accurately with huge points and maybe even a chuckle or two.
The controls are amazingly precise, with three available options to maximize your accuracy. Touching the screen will bring up a tiny cross-hair that can be dragged over your target and then released to make the shot. Dragging near the edges of the screen scrolls the level, though this isn't always smooth and can lead to lost shots - or worse yet lost points if you hit the wrong target accidentally.
The art is a combination of hand-drawn country vistas with 3D rendered 2D sprites for the chickens that are running amok around the world. It's hard to tell just exactly what's available to shoot without first trying, but with each attempt to beat your previous score you're bound to find new secrets while learning what to avoid.
Grouse Hunting is a modestly simple game with a fairly complex reward system. It's hard not to feel ripped off when tickets fail to spew out of the bottom of our iPhone to trade in for a sparkly-pen, but you can always play it again to burn off that frustration. A great game for the kids and a simple shooter for the casual crowd.
