There's a kind of magic that comes from developers that use the free-to-download but pay-to-play model correctly and Skies of Glory by SGN will have you handing out cash almost willingly.
As the name implies it's a flight simulator with arcade style dog-fighting. The game's set in World War II and takes players on a world-wide tour as you progress through the missions. Your accelerometer controls the basic tilt and lift of your plane, while touches and drags allow you to manipulate your air-speed, yaw and weaponry easily. The aim of the game is accurate agile maneuvering and after a few short minutes you'll be doing loops and twists like a pro.
A lot of detail has gone in to replicating the vast amount of planes in the game. Each is skinned vividly and looks stunning as it swoops around at high-altitudes. The world itself is fairly poorly rendered and uses washed out textures, but the overall design is immersive and authentic. Depending on your prowess, planes and weapon configurations will unlock, but it's also worthwhile checking out the additional missions, skirmishes or planes available from the in game store.
You may need to buy at least one plane to play competitively online, but while you're at it you may just find yourself buying more missions to keep you occupied offline. But even without paid content Skies of Glory has so much to offer and from casual gamers to flight-sim fanatics the game's free to play content is stunning value.
