PROS

  • Bomber-style gameplay without the bloody mess.
  • Multiple cities and busy environments to fly over.
  • Easy to pick up controls.

CONS

  • Only so many ways people can say 'go relieve yourself on things' before it gets repetitive.

VERDICT

Pigeon Squadron goes a little too far in offering value for money, squeezing players through 45 missions that could have been tightened up to make the story work a little better.

In Pigeon Squadron by I-play you're the newest recruit in a ragtag bunch of pigeons who have made it their mission to fight back against the humans who have made their lives a living hell in the cities.

There are currently 45 missions in three cities to complete and in every one your goal is a relatively simple one - drop a deuce on just about everything that moves. The controls are certainly simple enough to get used to as well, with tilting to turn your pigeon around and a button to drop your 'load'. Aiming is also a snap thanks to your bird acting as a kind of cross-hair, making it easy to hit your targets.

While each city is relatively small, they feel like something out of a sandbox title and the dense amount of people, animals and vehicles roaming the streets really helps to flesh out the environments. Sadly the missions don't take much advantage of these varied environments, simply opting for each mission to be a variant of 'hit x number of y target'. There is a story to tie all of these missions together, but as it stands it's hard to be engaged when you already know what you have to do before anyone opens their beak.

Basically Pigeon Squadron feels like another basic variation on the 'bomber' style of Apps we've already seen on the App Store, but at least there's something more enjoyable about merely being a nuisance instead of a mass-murderer; plus who can't get a small chuckle about of causing a traffic pile-up thanks to a well timed evacuation.
