PROS

  • Interesting 'no tower' TD gameplay.
  • Simple controls system.

CONS

  • Far too easy on all but the hardest difficulty.
  • That damn song that everyone uses on a permanent loop!

VERDICT

A Fighter Defender needs more time to balance the gameplay and perhaps add more for the player to do so they're not locked in to a repetitive spiral of actions.

A Fighter Defender by MystoneGame proposes a small change to the tower defense (TD) genre. Just a small one. How about having no towers? See, not much of a change!

Each map is designed not unlike regular TD maps, with winding paths and a few long stretches that would stretch the resources of someone trying to place towers effectively. However you're not placing towers, you're flying a plane and this comes with the rather strong advantage of exploiting the terrain to pick off units quickly and easily. Two buttons allow you to turn left and right, while three additional buttons allow you to shoot, drop bombs and (strangely I might add) also drop freeze bombs. The last two are limited in their amounts, but can be replenished as random pick-ups from destroyed vehicles. Your plane has two stats (attack and speed) that can be upgraded, helping you to dominate your enemies effectively.

All of this would sound good if it wasn't for the lack of balance. What makes a TD so good is that constant feeling of being just on the edge of failure (with maybe a few losses here or there) without quite tipping over. Here you're dominating from the outset and things only get more insane as enemies get slower (albeit with more health), making your job even easier.

A Fighter Defender is a good idea gone wrong and while the concept should be applauded, its execution leaves a lot to be desired and I can only recommend this game as an interesting exercise in unique gameplay.
