Font Monsters Review
PROS
- Unique variation on 'action typing'.
- Clever creature designs.
CONS
- Some letter warping can be seriously vague to read.
- Later levels require rote memorization.
VERDICT
It's not quite Typing of the Dead, but Font Monsters tries something different and while it's not terribly exciting it has some cleverly animated designs that are fun to check out.

If someone told me before today that I'd be playing and enjoying a game about shooting creatures made out of letters and symbols, I'd probably look at them a bit funny and consider them a bit nutty. Then again, I did enjoy a game about shooting zombie cookies with a milk gun that fires when you type words, so perhaps Font Monsters by Muu Muu isn't that crazy after all.
In short all you have to do is to identify what letters and symbols the creature you're facing is made of and correctly type them in to the keyboard to knock them away. Should you select the wrong letter the creature will fire letters back at you that need to be countered before they deplete your shield. After a while the creature will get close enough to attack you directly, but until the later stages this isn't going to happen very often.
The creatures themselves are highly imaginative, moving around fluidly to add to the difficulty and despite some severe warping used to create different parts of the creature the font used is easy to read. Sadly there's just no real sense of progress to the game and defeating monsters is rewarded with a bland score before moving on to the next one. For a while the creatures are entertaining and unique enough to make the game worth continuing, but once you start getting repeats it quickly starts to get boring.
Font Monsters is a great idea let down by a lack of depth in the gameplay itself and while there's some entertainment value in seeing Muu Muu's creative designs it's an easy game to put down again after only a few attempts.
