In most bullet hell style shoot'em-ups you'd likely find yourself needing to analyze and memorize complex patterns as enemies and bosses spew forth orbs of death like a deadly fireworks display. Act of Fury: Kraine's Revenge by Forge Reply manages to forgo the usual slew of bullets, but is no less of a 'hell' as your character is similarly lacking in ranged firepower, because he IS the firepower.
Kraine is been imbued with super-powers allowing him to generate a powerful and destructive storm around him which is subsequently used to tear apart buildings and enemies alike. This places him, more often than not, in to extremely dangerous situations (like right next to a powerful tank), but the catch is that any bullets caught directly in the storm will be instantly destroyed.
"Too easy," you say? Far from it as the developer is well aware of the holes this creates in the offensive capacity of the enemies and so you'll find yourself only able to hit one or two enemies at a time, sweating out the tenths of a second it takes between a barrage hitting you and your current targets blowing up.
Stars are earned based on the prowess of the player's piloting skills and can subsequently be spent and redistributed amongst a series of power-ups that change how Kraine behaves - adding anything from elemental effects to his storm to increasing the effectiveness of power-ups dropped in the world.
Should you find the game too easy you can turn the difficulty up to eleven by turning on 'Hell Mode' which not only beefs up the damage and health of enemies but also keeps bullets in play at all times, meaning there's no safety net in place.
Act of Fury: Kraine's Revenge is far from the usual casual fodder on the App Store and for this reason alone it may never see true success. Its broader appeal is limited thanks to its difficulty, but it's far from unfair and given practice you'll be smashing foes in a new and incredibly fun new way without too much trouble.
