Zombies. They’re (still) everywhere. These days, though, they’re about as frightening as a bad cold going around the office.
We’ve been talking with Jed Games about their new app JED-GO Untouchable, and they are the first to admit zombies may have lost a little bit of their impact of late.
(Well, maybe the second.)
“Zombies are so popular now, no one’s surprised when you see their semi-decayed faces on-screen any more,” Jed Games say.
Oh... and did we mention JED-GO Untouchable is a game about shooting zombies?
But Jed Games are confident that their app does enough to blast through the global zombie fatigue and emerge on the 'other side' as a fresh and addictive new game.
“While zombies certainly play their part in our game, it’s really focused on Jed the cowboy, the player-controlled character tasked with stopping this zombie invasion.
“Jed is a brave cowboy who you control by flying up and down with his rocket pack. There are three paths of undead shambling greedily towards tasty brains, and it’s your job to help Jed hold them back.
"Though you only have to do this in short bursts, it feels like a lot longer, and gets very tense."
So, there’s a tower defence element to JED-GO Untouchable, as well. To wit, each of the three brains you are tasked with protecting has a health bar that depletes as enemies crash through your attacks.
Sounds easy enough, but there’s more to this zombie-munching experience than just mindless shooting, as Jed Games explain.
“Well, of course everyone knows headshots are the thing to (ahem) aim for, but eventually the zombies figure this out and start using heavy artillery against you.
"At this point, it becomes impossible to stop the hordes with just your gun, so you have to collect bombs, grenades, and incendiary charges.
“But these items are rare and must be used sparingly. There can be huge waves of zombies when you least expect it, so save your money and look after your alternative weapons."
And it’s earning money that keeps you coming back for more in JED-GO Untouchable.
You earn cash for every enemy killed, you see, and you are given the opportunity to go shopping after the end of every round. There are two areas for you to upgrade: Jed himself or his secondary weapons.
You can increase the damage dealt by Jed, the accuracy of his primary weapons, or the frequency with which secondary weapons, such as grenades, appear.
“I would recommend choosing one play style and sticking with it. Sometimes, if you try to upgrade both, you can end up compromising and having less impact. Either shoot straght and hard, or aim for the big explosive weapons.”
An exclusive tip from the developer for you right there, AppSpy readers.
“We're very happy with how JED-GO Untouchable turned out,” Jed Games continue. “It has a very cheerful and bright look, which contrasts with the zombie apocalypse storyline, giving it a unique humour.”
“We designed the game with boredom in mind. We wanted to brighten up people’s days if they are stuck in a long queue or a traffic jam, and we think we can make hours turn into minutes.
"It’s a cathartic way to spend your spare time, too, fulfilling a ‘time killer’ function perfectly.”
You can download JED-GO Untouchable as an iOS Universal app for free right now on iTunes.
