App Wrap Up (Week Ending, August 10th 2012)

By , on August 10, 2012

It's the end of the week and time for the 3rd installment of App Wrap Up. Man, there's just so many games coming out. I guess it's cause everyone is finally gearing up towards the final quarter, which is just game overload for every platform. I guess we can expect to see a lot more of these. As always, we're just posting trailers of games that look like they might have something interesting to offer. Our analysis is based on the trailers. Without further ado, let's begin.

Sunshine (Morbidware di Diego Sacchetti)

I've played a couple games like this before for review. They're simple 'one touch to jump' platformers that utilise the orbit of planets, kind of like a 2d Super Mario Galaxy. This one has a puimping soundtrack, a good use of colour, and the design looks to take its cues from Super Meat Boy, especially in emphasising dying. Based on the trailer alone, this looks like it could be a winner.

Beetle Bounce ( LavaMind LLC)

Well aside from the music sounding like 'I love you' by The Barenaked Ladies, it kind of looks like a game based around breaking a shot in Pool... only with beetles. Games that have a little bit of a random element plus a high score mechanic can be quite addictive when tuned right. Just look at Peggle.

Little Dragon 3d (FLYLEAP STUDIOS PTY LTD)

This one has a very striking cel-shaded style. The gameplay looks a bit bland, but perhaps the joy of flight in game supercedes that. Also while watching this trailer, my room mate came over and remarked, "That's not a dragon, that's a hamster with wings!". So did i add this game purely for anecdotal reasons? Partially.

Thinko (LANDKA)

A match three game with lifesavers, rings with different powers, and rings that form together and grow. I have to admit i didn't fully understand how the game worked from the trailer, but with the music and gameplay style, it seems like a relaxing time waster.

Wannabat (Vitusoft Inc.)

While the trailer doesn't show much, and it does emphasize the game store, it looks like this battle between Baseball pitcher and batter has a lot of fun and goofiness to it. The visuals are quite crisp too.

And that's it for this week. I'm sure next week will see more of this column, but perhaps not three entires. Till next time!
