DEMONS' SCORE Review
When you bring together notable composers responsible for the stunning soundtracks of games like Final Fantasy 11, Nier, and Secret of Mana, you’d like to think their work is showcased appropriately. I’m not entirely sold on the ‘appropriate’ part when it comes to the magic-transforming-teenager-and-skimpy-clothes department of Demons’ Soul by Square Enix, but the rhythm-based gameplay is perhaps the best way to showcase its music. You play as Ser…
Watch The Video ReviewFIFA SOCCER 13 by EA SPORTS Review
The waves keep crashing against the beach; the sun keeps rising; and the moon’s orbit slowly decays to an eventual stop; such are the many natural things we can can count on to happen every day, including Electronic Arts’ inevitable update to the FIFA franchise. If you detect a slightly sour bitterness on the palette, don’t worry, it’s just a sore point borne of the cyclical nature of the game industry. There is, however, a benefit to this kind of repet…
Watch The Video ReviewEarn to Die Review
Flightless birds and spaceward-bound rodents may make for cute and heartfelt inspirations for repeatedly launching them towards their ultimate goal, but there has always been an element missing from the experience - a sense of skill. Earn to Die by Toffee Games and Not Doppler fleshes out the short, but uniquely fun Flash game title, pitting you against the ever-ready threat of zombies, but for once your progress will also be bound to your skills as a driver. In games of this sort the…
Watch The Video ReviewServer Maintenence Incoming
Due to a scheduled maintenence of the servers AppSpy is hosted on, we are expecting our site to be slow (and possibly inacitve) from 1:30am to 3:30 am on Sunday the 23rd of September (-4 GMT). Apologies in advance and we hope to have things up and running smoothly as soon as possible thereafter!…
Friday News Wrap-Up 21 September 2012
With the iPhone 5 officially out, I honestly can’t hold all of these Apps I need to review. Dave and I are working overtime to sort through them all, but until then you can enjoy the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 21st of September, 2012. Coaster Crazy - Out Later This YearThose familiar with Frontier Developments will remember their work on LostWinds and LostWinds 2, and in particular, the solid iOS adaptions of both titles. Coaster Crazy is set to also hit the App Store and places you in charge of designing roller-coasters that need to cater to every patron’s whim, be it fast loops, speedy turns, or scary drops. There’s a sort of Rollercoaster Tycoon vibe, albeit…
Spectromancer Review
[This game was featured as the mini-review for the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 21st of September, 2012] If you’ve played Hothead’s ‘Kard Combat’ then you’ll know what you’re in for with Three Donkeys’ iPhone and iPad title ‘Spectromancer’. Players are handed a ‘deck’ comprised of an infinite amount of various cards, each requiring a certain amount of ‘mana’ to cast. Each turn you’ll earn a base amount…
Watch The Video ReviewSTREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN MOBILE Review
In only three short months STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN (SFxTK) has undergone a transition from its true home on Consoles and PCs to the mobile platform. Fighter fans may take exception to my wording there, but fear not, Street Fighter on iOS has (to date) been adapted almost perfectly for touch-screen devices. SFxTK is no exception to this and indeed it places even more emphasis on its ‘versus’ modes than ever before - sure you can enjoy the game single-player, but if you have…
Watch The Video ReviewLili™ Review
If you’re one of the handful of people who If you’re one of the handful of people who missed out on hearing about Lili by BitMonster, then you’re in for a treat. There was absolutely no question of how beautiful this game was going to be as it not only sports the Unreal Engine, but those who made it are ex-Epic and quite familiar with how to use it. However, what really counts isn’t the presentation, but how it interacts with the gameplay - and on this score the…
Watch The Video ReviewGibbets 2 Review
Sometimes it’s hard to know whether a game is controlling badly because you’ve missed some key bit of information, or because the game itself has poor controls. Gibbets 2 by HeroCraft had me pondering this problem on the second level - which I might point out took quite a few tries before I worked it out - and ultimately it was a little bit of column A and B, but the damage had already been done. Your task, should you take it, is to aim a bow and rescue the people being hu…
Watch The Video ReviewRayman Jungle Run Review
When it comes to the Rayman series, I feel as though it has been a slow-burner - though always fun, the success of its spin-offs has brought the series full-circle and we’re being reminded of what it feels like to play a high-quality platformer. Rayman Jungle Run may strip-out the depth of a regular Rayman game, but what’s left is far from casual in its challenge as you use taps to jump, glide, wall-run and yes, even punch your way through stages. To reduce the controls to…
Watch The Video ReviewSword Of Fargoal 2 - Kickstarter Underway
Sword of Fargoal is not only a retro-classic, but a hit on the App Store thanks to a lovely make-over that appealed to nostalgic retro-gamers and newcomers alike. Jeff McCloud is keen to capitolize on the game's success by taking the concept even further by packing in 'more' than ever before: "...more spells. More monsters. More traps. Better graphics. More music. Animation. New characters types. New quests. A new dungeon-generation system, and much more." To ensure the game is as jam-packed full of features as possible, Fargoal has taken to Kickstarter to fund the remaining '20%' that hopes to add more animations, music, procedural map generation, 'action cards' to re-watch moments fro…
Verticus - From The Mind Of Stan Lee
I'm not saying the Stan Lee is an automatic 'win' when it comes to new concepts, but it's hard to fault the man who has fought so passionately for the nerdy pasttime of reading comics. Verticus places players in control of a 'jump suit' falling towards the center of the Earth and dispatching 'Obliterators' on the way down. In a way the game comes off as a third-person rail-shooter and frankly the more of those we can get on to the App Store the better, especially when it looks this good. Controlled Chaos Media have teased the gameplay via their YouTube Channel - see if it whets your whistle. Those keen to try out the game for themselves will have to wait, but not for too long as…
Bad Piggies - Build'em-up Puzzling Fun
We may have already covered the teaser unleashed upon us by Rovio, but one thing we weren't ready to do was put our foot down on how we feel about their brand-new franchise. Thankfully Yahoo obtained an exclusive video peek at the gameplay we can expect out of Bad Piggies... and it looks great. Much like Amazing Alex the game has a creative spin to its physics puzzling. Personally I'm excited to see just how much freedom we're given in creating and conrolling the contraptions made to ferry the pigs. Check out the video for yourself: The game is set for a 27th September launch date - mark it down and keep an eye on our site for our review! [Yahoo - Bad Piggies]…
Blood Roofs Review
You're beset by hordes of giant demonic monsters and you find a damsel in distress (albeit managing to survive without much trouble): What do you do? You rescue her, of course, and see how far you can run before the nightmares catch up to you. This is Blood Roofs. Much like other auto-runners of late, you'll find yourself diving in to the screen instead of going from side-to-side. The platforming element of the genre classics is retained as you jump between rooftop to rooftop, but in…
Watch The Video ReviewInfinite Warrior Review
'Endless' auto-runners are once again in their heyday on the App Store, but those paying attention won't have missed the distinct swerve towards Infinity Blade's swipe'em-up combat. Infinite Warrior by Empty Flask Games takes a bite of inspiration from both, mixed with a dash of rhythm gameplay, to create something that sounds potentially exciting, but in practice falls flat. You, as the eponymous Infinite Warrior, find yourself swiping the screen to match on-screen cues in order to u…
