Hands-on with Plunder Pirates: Halloween Update, the spooky update for the premier piratical strategy management game
I've been playing Plunder Pirates since July, and even did the review for Pocket Gamer. Though I don't think I'd ever get bored at looking at crystal clear blue oceans, swaying palm trees, and pirate antics, there's a scary new update for Halloween. Here's a look at some of what's new (as well as a very thinly disguised attempt to show off how cool my island is).…
Hands-on with Walking War Robots, where World of Tanks meets MechWarrior
If that headline made you do a double-take, then prepare thyself: Walking War Robots is currently the closest thing to a modern MechWarrior action game for your mobile. The engine powering the game is impressive, even if some of the UI elements are a bit old hat, and the feeling of being part of a squad taking on another team is palpable. This one could break big, so educate yourself now.…
Hands-on with Base Busters, the explosive reverse tower defence game
Actually, now that I think about it, to call just call Base Busters a “reverse tower defence game” is a slight disservice, as there are actually two modes of play on offer. The first is reverse TD: taking on an enemy stronghold through wit, cunning, and powerful vehicles. The second is traditional TD: setting up a base that you feel will give you the best possible chance of withstanding an attack. It's a cool concept, and I talk more about it in our Base Busters hands-on, so have a watch and see for yourself.…
Hands-on with Sleep Attack TD, the tower defence game with a twist
The big difference between Sleep Attack TD and other tower defence games is that you can rotate the battlefield to work in your favour, and this one change makes for a refreshing gameplay experience in a genre that's now a little old in the tooth. It's cute too, with a frankly adorable cartoon look. Check it out in my sneak peek below.…
Retry is out now on iOS and Android, thousands of gamers preparing to scream obscenities at their phones and tablets
Way back in May we went hands-on with Retry, and found an astonishingly challenging arcade game with a very appealing retro aesthetic, great music, and tight controls. The global release of Retry has just landed on iOS and Android, you can try its own brand of teeth-gnashingly tough flight action for free right now. Want it? Get it using the links below. Hands-on with Rival Stars Basketball, the basketball based collectible card game
PikPok's latest title is Rival Stars Basketball, a collectible card battler of sorts, only with basketball players instead of the usual fantastical creatures. Most of the play revolves around taking your team, comprised of cards you've collected through the game, and facing them against other teams to find out who has the better cards. Occasionally you'll get a minigame sequence, and there's an evolving and upgrading system in here too. There's more info in the hands-on below, so click play and have a peek.…
Hands-on with South Park: Pinball, sweeeeeeeet
Being a big fan of both Zen Pinball and South Park, I couldn't wait to take a look at this latest title from Zen Studios. In South Park: Pinball there's a dedicated South Park table, and one that's dedicated to Butters too, and I walk you through both in this hands-on. So click play on the video below, and let me know if you'll be picking it up in our comments section.…
Genre Busters: top 3 best games made by bands on iOS
Having conquered the world of rock and roll, a few bands and artists are now starting to get into video games. It's a slightly odd phenomenon, and one that hasn't produced too many amazing results yet, but James and I decided to take a look at the best of what's on offer, and tell you whether they're any good or not. We also find that James is not a big fan of nu-metal. Not one little bit. Want the Single Edit? Here are the games we cover, click the link to skip to the gameplay. 1. Hail to the King: Deathbat2. Polyfauna3. Linkin Park Recharge - Wastelands…
You won't believe who you get to play as in A Ninja Zombie Knight Space Racer
What's better than getting to play as either a ninja, a zombie, or a knight in a video game? Getting to play as either a ninja, a zombie, or a knight in a video game that is set in outer space, that's what. Sure, A Ninja Zombie Knight Space Racer looks a lot like a game by a certain Andreas Illiger, but can you hold that against it when it features a ninja, a zombie, and a knight racing through space? No. No I don't think you can. A Ninja Zombie Knight Space Racer features 35 levels, has single player and multiplayer modes, plus loads of characters. The game's out on the 26th of October on iOS, here's a multiplayer trailer for you.…
Hands-on with The Bot Squad: Puzzle Battles, Ubisoft's bot battling puzzler
Ubisoft's new tower defence game - The Bot Squad: Puzzle Battles - is slick. Really slick. You control a group of robots to try to reach an exit point, avoiding gun turrets along the way, all the while collecting stars and soft currency. On the flipside, sometimes you'll need to defend a position, at which point you're controlling the position of the towers. The visuals are absolutely fantastic, the controls work well, and the free-to-play stuff seems okay. Check it out.…
The narrator from Stick Squad has the gruffest voice ever, consequently this trailer is amazing
Brutal Studio has created a game called Stick Squad. It features first person sniper shooting, explosive assaults, hostages to save, and so on. 60 objectives across 20 maps, loads of guns and plenty of upgrades too. Sounds good. What sounds even better is the trailer. Specifically the narrator for the trailer. He is the gruffest, most hard-boiled sounding dude I've ever heard. It's amazing. Want to try Stick Squad for yourself? Grab it on iPhone or iPad now. [App Store link]…
Smash IT! Adventures trailer shows how you can smash squidgy monsters in their stupid podgy faces
Agnes is a witch who is trying to rescue her cat. Grab Smash IT! Adventures for free on iOS or Android. [App Store link] [Google Play link] …
Twerking Ball features a naked 8-bit version of Miley Cyrus in a Flappy Bird clone, and this headline is probably the best bit of SEO I'll ever write
Twerking Ball is a rope flying game in which you need to zip through oncoming pipes in a Spider-Man style. It's a spin on Flappy Bird and Mikey Hooks, basically. It also features a cheeky pixel art rendition of Miley Cyrus, because sure, why not. It's free and available now. Fill your boots via the store links below. [App Store link][Google Play link]…
Reshape gameplay video may well leave you spinning
In Reshape, all you need to do is rotate a square in the middle of the screen so that the triangles headed toward it connect all nice, and in turn create a larger square. It's a simple concept for a game, and though it starts off easy, things get faster as your score goes up, making things much harder. Reshape is available for free on iOS right now. Go take a look. [App Store link]…
