Niantic and Capcom have opened pre-orders for the next instalment of the storied Action RPG series, Monster Hunter Now. Coming to mobile on September 14th, players the world over will be able to team up to take on the monstrous monoliths wherever they may be.
Bring all of the fun of the Monster Hunter juggernaut to the palm of your hand, Now has taken the rather genius approach of limiting each battle. On consoles, your hunts could last 10 or 20 minutes, which of course wouldn’t work on the move. So, fights are condensed down to just 75 seconds, a much more manageable chunk of time.
Combat has been simplified down to a one-finger, tap-and-flick control method. You can dodge from side to side, unleash combos with rapid taps, or unleash a huge attack by holding. This is of course not going to be as in-depth as console entries, but there is still enough to keep veterans happy, and an excellent entry-level for new fans.
One of the most enduring tools in Monster Hunter history is also making a comeback; the humble Paintball. Long used as a way to track monsters, if you come across a foe you wish to fight out in the world but don’t have the time, you can tag it with a paintball and battle it later wherever you are. You can even engage these tagged monsters with friends, a rather fantastic mechanic.
For those of us who preferred the Dual Swords or the Insect Glaive, there is so bad news on the weapon front. Monster Hunter Now has narrowed the choices down to Sword and Shield, Great Sword, Long Sword, Hammer, Light Bowgun, and Bows. The developers have confirmed there are more types on the way, so fingers crossed we will be all kitted out soon.
Monster Hunter Now is available to pre-order now from the App Store and Google Play.
