For the first time in its 20-year history, the first new combat style has been added to RuneScape; Necromancy. Sitting out the traditional rock-paper-scissors system or Melee, Ranged and Magic, Necromancer will be a stand-alone style with no inherent strengths or weaknesses, just a whole lot of fun.

It has been a long time coming, and the first-of-its-kind introduction isn't coming quietly. It is one of the premier updates for 2023 and comes with a deep, lore-rich adventure introducing players old and new to this new way to play. It will also come with some new skills vital for success but don’t worry, as the story will give you all you need.

Players will delve deep into the underworld of Gielinor, called The City of Um, a name that ruined the trailer as we had to repeat it going is it really just Um? Necromancers will wield a Death Guard and Skull Lantern, perfecting the art of darkness, and receiving training in the Ritual and Runecrafting skills. There will be nine quests to complete, and two deadly bosses to unless your new wrath upon.

Given the immensity of this new implementation, Jagex has a full roadmap planned for the rest of this year to commemorate the occasion. September will address updates based on player feedback, something Jagex has always been good with, and October will bring a new quest, as well as a very fitting Halloween event. Finally, November will bring with it a massive new boss battle for the quest line.

Free players are able to experience Necromancy up until level 20, a nice and most likely frustrating small introduction that will have member numbers swell. If, and most likely when, you join, it will then scale up to level 120, giving you the chance to become a master of the underworld.

Runescape is available to download now from the App Store and Google Play.
