Despite their simplistic look, retro grid-based strategy games like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics provide countless hours of joy and soon we can throw one more onto the pile with Athena Crisis. And with Null Games announcing the release date recently, we now know when.
Athena Crisis is an upcoming strategy game that draws a lot of inspiration from the classics such as Advanced Wars, with over 40 types of units to cobble together and command. There will be seven environments to conquer, each with its own perks and disadvantages for you to master.
You can tackle the single-player story mode, comprised of over 30 maps and missions or head online for some truly mammoth tactical challenges. Up to seven players can compete at once in ranked and casual battles, which sounds like it will lead to some amazing tactical showdowns. There is also a massive customising scene, with players being able to create their own maps and campaigns to share. Perfect for those who have that creative itch to scratch.
There is a feature that you can get in on right now that is incredibly cool. Pop over to the official website, scroll down a bit, and you can play a level from the game in-browser to get a taste. I checked, and it works on mobile browsers too. It's a neat little preview that the developers put out, which I find absolutely adorable.
The last time I covered Athena Crisis, around two months ago, the mobile storefronts weren't open. Well, wouldn't you know it! They still aren't, but we do now know the game will launch on September 23rd. If you buy it once, you can play across any device with automatic game state syncing. It is incredibly tempting to buy just so that the feature catches on.
