Back in late 2013, early 2014, there was a mobile craze that swept the world and found its way onto every piece of hardware people had; I talk, of course, of Flappy Bird. It felt like the biggest thing in the world at the time before being removed from storefronts, but it is about to make its long-awaited comeback.
If you are unaware of the backstory to Flappy Bird, it is a fairly simple but frustratingly difficult game where you tap your screen to make a bird fly through columns of pipes. The hitboxes are unforgiving, and you would be lucky if you could make it past a dozen or so before you have to start over.
Despite this, it had huge popularity, seemingly from nowhere. Almost overnight, it just exploded and was downloaded a mouth-watering number of times. The developer then suddenly pulled the game from stores, and those who had it on their phone were left with a literal gold brick, cause people were selling phones with the game on it for ridiculous money.
It's perhaps the craziest popularity story of a mobile game there has been, and it is scheduled to start again in 2025. It will be interesting to see if it can recapture the mania it created the first time, especially seeing as it is being handled by another time this time round.
The Flappy Bird Foundation is a squad of fans of the original, we were determined to bring back this fury-inducing menace. All credit to them, they have done the leg work to make it happen. The official trademark rights were acquired from Gametech Holdings LLC, and they also went a step further to get those of the inspiration for Flappy, Piou Piou vs Cactus.
Thanks to all this hard work, we can all soon lose our thumbs and fingers again to overzealous tapping. This new version will debut new game modes, characters, progression, and multiplayer challenges. Hopefully, they don’t change too much so the original Flappy Spirit is kept intact.
