Back in 2019, a small indie studio called Other Tales Interactive casually dropped a co-op puzzler called Tick Tock: A Tale for Two and then proceeded to set off on what can only be described as an awards tear. Now they are returning with Miniatures, and are looking to do the same again.
Tick Tock absolutely took off, winning multiple awards including the 2020 Best Debut from Spilprisen and the 2019 Google Play Most Inventive award. Obviously winning is good, but it's what they got nominated for that is arguably most noteworthy amongst the other dozen nods; the Multiplayer BAFTA in 2020. All this to say, Miniatures should probably be on your radar.
Miniatures is a collection of interactive short stories, placing an emphasis more on going through an artistic adventure as opposed to miles-a-minute gameplay. As a whole it should only take you around 45 minutes to experience all the content, or you can space it out and fully experience each of the four stories individually.
During these tales, you will be interacting with dreamlike puzzles and you inspect oddities, build weird and wonderful objects, and take a trip down memory lane as you find lost memories. Other Tales set out to have its player base reflect on what it is to be a child; lacking the money to subscribe to online gaming—a terrible time.
People who don’t have a crippling MMO addiction however seem to be already enjoying themselves, with Miniatures already reaping some rewards. It was nabbed the MAZE Berlin 2024 WINGS Award and the Digital Vikings Best Upcoming Game Art Style. It will be interesting to see if Other Tales can catch lightning in a bottle twice.
In a piece of excellent news, we won’t have to wait too long to see if Miniatures can live up to its older sibling, as it shall launch on iOS on November 14th.
