If you have read a few of my past articles you might think that I will take any chance to bash the way Square Enix treats its mobile portfolio, and you would be right, it is horrendous. Not to be outdone, however, EA has announced quite the streamlining of their mobile games.
Already previously announced was the shuttering of The Simpsons: Tapped Out, having already been removed from storefronts on October 31st before eventually closing on January 24th. It is a game that still had a decent player base, and we never got a solid reason why they made this decision, barring a pithy announcement about how it was an “emotional” one. No doubt also a financial one.
Let's move onto new, admittedly smaller games, all set to shut down on January 29th. Fans of a certain third-person shooter series are set to receive a double slap as both Frontline Commando 2 and Frontline Commando: D-Day will both be biting the dust, having seemingly already been removed from app stores.
Unfortunately for those who fancy themselves hunters, you will be also losing two outlets. Deer Hunter Classic will be setting its adorable creatures free, as will Dino Hunter: Deadly Shores. A slightly less adorable quarry to be sure. Contract Killer: Sniper will also be downing tools, which I suppose is also a type of hunter, hurray for themes.
Finally, RPGs have sadly not escaped the slaughter. Blood & Glory: Immortals and Eternity Warriors 4 will be ending their journeys on the fated January date. It is a long list sadly, with a few good titles. EA has also not announced any preservation plans, so it is the end of several eras.
Nintendo showed recently you can end a mobile game and still give the fans what they want, with the upcoming single-player version of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, whilst charging for it. It’s an approach that is a win-win, and hopefully, other companies pick up on this tactic. Like a certain Square Enix. Sorry, can’t resist.
