I am reporting on this for two equally important reasons. One; it is an incredibly important franchise and a massive milestone in mobile gaming history, and two; I am stunned that Angry Birds has only been a thing for 15 years. And yet, this is exactly what Rovio is celebrating; Angry Birds 15th anniversary.
It is hard to say exactly which mobile game has had the biggest cultural impact out of Angry Birds, Candy Crush, or the true OG, Snake, but I would say it's our angry avian friends. There have been countless spinoffs of the beloved bird-flinging classic, and even two mediocre movies, with a third reportedly in the works.
I say again with incredulity that Angry Birds is marking 15 years as a franchise, and to celebrate, Rovio is holding a number of special events in its games. Our first event will last until November 17th, with a special tournament dubbed Angryversary: Nostalgia Flight taking place in Angry Birds Friends, available on the App Store and Google Play.
Next will be the sequel to the spawn of it all, with a special Anniversary hat popping up in Angry Birds 2 from November 21st to the 28th, so check that out on iOS and Android. Just a quick note to so what a bloody letdown that is for arguably the current flagship. Lastly, these in-game events will wrap up with a Jigsaw Event in Angry Birds Dream Blast from December 12th to the 16th, again on the App Store and Google Play.
Rovio and parent company SEGA have stated a desire to expand the franchise across more media, which they are also using the anniversary to achieve. Prime Video and Amazon Kids+ received the Angry Birds Mystery Island: A Hatchlings Adventure in May, and there is the aforementioned third movie coming.
Outside of moving media, Angry Birds will also appear in two comic books, and there will be celebrations in the form of music, digital art, food, and more. There has also been a big shiny billboard in Times Square since January. So, head over there if you want an eyeful.
