I feel like a lot of my generation's first exposure to 3D action adventure was Tomb Raider on the PS1. Lara Croft is one of gaming's most iconic characters for this and many reasons. Soon, players can re-experience one of her side adventures, as Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light readies itself for mobile launch.
Guardian of Light was quite the departure from the usual outings of one of our favourite explorers. At least in the case of gameplay, she is always accidentally plundering something mystical. Croft’s instinct to always go after the thing that could potentially wipe out large swathes of the earth is almost impressive. But I digress.
The gameplay takes the form of an almost top-down twin-stick adventure full of combat and puzzles. It is a fully co-op adventure where you take the role of either Lara Croft or an ancient Mayan warrior called Totec. They each have their own mechanics, as Croft maintains her dual pistols and grappling hook, whilst Totec wields throwing spears for both combat and with which Lara can platform.
Back when this was released on Xbox Live Arcade in 2010, I played through this with a friend, and I remember it being pretty good fun. The combat was solid and enjoyable, but it was the puzzles that were the highlight. It had some very interesting conundrums with some pretty tricky solutions at times.
Thanks to its twin-stick controls, Guardian of Light will be an excellent addition to any mobile library, thanks to the ease it will translate to a touchscreen. You could also quite hook up any controller you have. Co-op can be done either online or locally for total ease, or you can settle down for a solo romp as Lara in her natural habitats; raiding them tombs.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available to pre-order from the App Store and Google Play ahead of its February 27th release date.
