K-Pop sensation BTS releases BTS WORLD, a boyband management game for iOS and Android

BTS WORLD, a story-based game that lets you become the manager of K-Pop boyband BTS, is now available for download over on the App Store and Google Play. As someone who has almost no knowledge of the band’s music or history, I don't exactly fall into the target demographic for BTS WORLD; but, admittedly, the trailer featured in an article over on Metro has actually impressed me a fair bit. You can receive text messages from the boys, take video calls, help them with their very busy schedules, and even manage their social media. The various decisions you make throughout your management career will seemingly have an impact on the way the narrative plays out. And, on top of all that,…

Unbroken Soul serves up a gauntlet of action-platforming brilliance

Upcoming platformer Unbroken Soul is one of 2019’s most promising mobile games. It comes to us from developer Chorrus Games, the minds behind The Quest Arena and Colour War. At first glance, it’s hard to kick the feeling that there’s perhaps something a little off about its pixelated visuals, though the gameplay shown in the trailer below appears fast, fluid, and tricky – just what we like to see from our hyper-challenging platformers. We also get a quick glimpse at some of the bosses, including a flame-spewing knight, a stone golem, and a giant slug. It seems like the whip will be an integral part of getting around the game’s various spike-filled hellscapes…

Hello Hero All Stars launches on iOS and Android

Known for their previous games Hello Hero and Hello Hero Epic Battle, Fincon’s latest title allows you to grow and manage your eccentric little mobile heroes even when the game is switched off. As a fantasy idle RPG then, Hello Hero All Stars doesn’t need continuous input from the player, instead, it allows you to progress when you’re focusing on other important stuff, like watching the latest drama on Netflix or doing the washing up. Ok, scratch that last one. The basic premise of the game is to defeat enemies, rescue heroes and to advance further along the road. Over time you’ll collect shiny new items and gear to enhance your heroes so they can combat tougher f…

Best mobile games of the year so far: Flappy Fighter

Best mobile games of the year so far: Flappy Fighter

My next pick, the first fighting game on the list, seemingly came out of nowhere. Its intensely silly premise caused a sudden spike in chatter, spurring us all on to give it a go, with many at the time treating it as something of a goofy curiosity. That being said, the real surprise with Andrew Baxter’s Flappy Fighter, a mashup of 2013’s Flappy Bird and Street Fighter, is just how polished and smartly designed it is – so much so that it has the potential to become one of the best games of its type on mobile. Right now, with only 1 playable character and no online PvP, you could argue that it feels more like a demo than a full game. But, in the heat of battle, these conc…

Best mobile games of the year so far: Tropico

So here’s something slightly different, a strategy game, to mix things up. Honestly, I’ve lost count of what entry we’re on now – 10, maybe? 11? I don’t know. But what I do know is that 2019 has already been so packed with good games that I could easily keep this whole thing going until we’re bringing in the New Year. I won’t, probably, but I could, maybe. Tropico, everyone’s favourite dictator-simulator, launched on iPad last year, but only recently became available for iPhone. Like most strategy games, it’s all about long-term planning and weighing up the dozens of options given to you at any one time. Want to be a fairly progressive d…

Developers we’d love to see on Playdate: Part 1

The recent announcement of Panic’s Playdate handheld and its interesting method of game distribution has got me thinking up all sorts of dream collaborations. With the potential for more than one season of games, we could end up seeing dozens of awesome Playdate-exclusive projects from our favourite teams. A few of these developers could well feature in season 1, which would be lovely, but I’d also like to propose a few stranger picks. So here are the first two developers that I think could be a great fit for the weird and (hopefully) wonderful Playdate. Asymmetric Asymmetric’s western epic West of Loathing is one of my favourite games in recent memory. It’s bursti…

Best mobiles games of the year so far: The Gardens Between

I reckon, by now, I’ve probably offered up a varied enough selection of GOTY candidates to justify throwing in another premium, story-based title. I’ve got a racer, a runner, a couple of roguelikes, another runner, two platformers, and some that don’t fit quite as tidily into any of the above. The Gardens Between The Gardens Between tells the story of two kids who escape the mundanity of their suburban setting to head out on an adventure through their own memories. It sounds almost too painfully twee on paper, but part of the appeal here is that very precarious balancing act. The player takes on the role of a nameless, omnipresent being floating above and guiding the two…

Best mobile games of the year so far: Ordia

Best mobile games of the year so far: Ordia

Ordia, the ninth pick in our rundown of the best games of the year so far, is a single-finger platformer from developer Loju. It’s also the newest game to be featured here, having only just released earlier this month. Ordia As a one-eyed ball of goo, you’ll start out by launching yourself from the bubbling primordial ooze to the endless caverns above. The goal is to continue working your way forever upwards, hopping between handpoint nodes and dodging the odd spike or hungry worm as you go. It’s all controlled with one finger in a way that’s somewhat similar to Angry Birds. It’s a system that feels simplistic at first, but, as you progress, you’ll need…

Where is West of Loathing for iOS?

Where is West of Loathing for iOS?

West of Loathing is one of maybe 5 games that I can say is consistently funny throughout the entirety of its runtime. Its writing is warm, light-hearted, and regularly chuckle-worthy. Memorable visual gags also abound in Asymmetric’s western-themed RPG epic, and its cast of goofball characters and silly locales make repeat plays impossibly inviting. All that being said, West of Loathing is currently only available on PC and Switch. An iPad version has been in the works for some time, as has an iPhone port, but news surrounding its release has long since dried up. From the very extensive amount of internet detective work I put into this, I gather that the iPad version has been ready…

Best mobile games of the year so far: The VideoKid

In what is now the 8th entry in this extended rundown of the best mobile games of the year so far, I’ve looked to the runner genre and selected a great little 80s throwback called The VideoKid. The VideoKid This one is perhaps best described as a smart play on the NES classic, Paperboy. And while its boxy characters and environments might not be overly reminiscent of the era, the stellar audio work and garish colours positively scream retro fun. It also helps that it’s jam-packed with a silly amount of goofy references, from Back to the Future to ThunderCats. The tricky skateboarding gameplay sees you switching lanes to avoid incoming obstacles, snapping up coins, and occasion…

Webzen released the much awaited MU Origin 2

Looking for your next 3D MMMORPG fix on mobile? MU Origin 2 launches today on iOS and Android, arriving just in time to fill that gap. As the second spin-off to Webzen’s highly popular MU series, the game successfully builds upon the various foundations set by the original while thrusting players into a new rendition of MU Kingdom – full of dungeons to plunder and enemies to battle. Any MMO is only as good as the way it lets you connect with others. Webzen recognized this, and so doubled down on numerous aspects that made the original MU Origin so successful while improving upon them. Intense real-time PvP battles make their return, for example, but this is also possible acros…

Stunning MMORPG ‘MU Origin 2 is just one week from global launch

Webzen’s epic fantasy MMORPG ‘MU Origin 2 has just been announced to launch globally for iOS and Android on May 28th. For those not in the know, MU Origin 2 will be the second spinoff to the legendary MU Origin series which is set to refine the original formula, bring back fan-favourite mechanics and ideas, and deliver a gorgous and mystrious world. The game will feature three starter character classes; the Elf, which excels at ranged combat, the Dark Knight, who's all about up-close encounters, and the Dark Wizard - a powerful magic user. The real-time combat promises to be tactical, fast, and full of potential for unique playstyles. PvE will almost certainly be as great as…

Latest update for the charming QubeTown is wedding-themed and packed with new content

QubeTown, is a feature-packed town building game that offers tons of farming fun, a vibrant fantasy world to get lost in, and a wonderfully wholesome community to interact with and become part of. It’s also a game that’s seen many impressive updates since its launch earlier this year, and this latest wedding-themed event is perhaps its best yet. The primary goal of the wedding festival is to help out Bryde, an interesting new character who’s having a hard time organising her perfect wedding. In order to help her out, you’ll be tasked with gathering a floral crown, a flower macaroon, and a wedding cake – all the essentials, basically. Gathering the required i…

Lootbox RPG offers tons of great turn-based dungeon crawler adventuring

Fans of old-school dungeon crawlers will find much to love in the recently released Lootbox RPG, the latest from the team behind classic RPG Silversword. This one serves up a generous portion of 2D loot-hunting and adventuring through hell itself, with a deep spell casting system and exciting turn-based combat to boot. You play as the son of ‘His Great Unholiness’, the Devil, after being summoned home to hell in order to defend the realm from powerful invaders. Through exploring randomly-generated dungeons, helping NPCs, earning loot, and taking on the foulest of creatures, you’ll eventually grow more powerful and capable of besting the late-game bosses. Each of the gam…

Latest update for Brown Dust adds new characters and an exciting tournament mode

Turn-based fantasy RPG ‘Brown Dust’ has become a tremendous success for publisher Neowiz thanks to its stellar visual presentation, intense combat, and compelling storytelling. Since launch, the game has received an impressive amount of fresh, fan-requested content, and its latest update might just be its best yet. The biggest draw here is the inclusion of a super challenging tournament mode, all ready and set to launch on May 30th. The top 128 players on each server will have the chance to progress through rounds, take on rivals, and earn a cache of exceedingly rare diamonds. And if you don’t quite make the cut, you can instead participate and nab some rewards by suppor…
