Acclaimed roguelike Dead Cells is headed to iOS on July 17th

Motion Twin’s acclaimed Metroidvania, Dead Cells, finally has an iOS release date of July 17th. Android players needn’t worry too much, as a port will be heading to Google Play in the near future. It’s a challenging roguelike that sees you traversing a sprawling castle, from the deepest dungeons to the ramparts on high. Our sister site, Pocket Gamer, gave the Switch version a whopping 9/10 on release– calling it “a new action platformer classic”. Combat is fast, gloriously bloody, and endlessly varied; it’s honestly one of the best feeling games around. That being said, I’m a tad sceptical about how well it’ll play using touchscreen c…

Hidden Gem of the Week: Manowar

Feature By Christian Valentin, 6 years, 6 months ago

Blend a swaying ship, cannons, and a colorful assortment of cannonballs together and you'd get the tricky and satisfying puzzle game that is Manowar. Trailer Each level of Manowar is the cutaway of a drifting ship filled with various platforms, barriers, and cannonballs, lined with cannons. The goal is simple: tilt the ship in the right ways that maneuver the cannonballs into the properly cannons and fire them into the surrounding ocean. The twist is that each time you fire a cannon also results in the remaining cannonballs to bounce into the air; this mechanical quirk lets you bounce cannonballs between platforms or even into position balacing atop other cannonballs. Then direction-spe…

Unorthodox multiplayer game One Hour One Life is headed to iOS and Android

In some ways, One Hour One Life is familiar. It has all the hallmarks of the popular survival genre: crafting, gathering resources, building shelters, other players running rampant. But that title describes its most unique attribute and secret to its generational pacing. "One Hour One Life" says it quite plainly: you have one life and it lasts an hour. You start as a defenseless baby and die at a ripe old 60, sixty minutes later with each passing minute equaling one year of life from infant to child and so on. As an infant, you must trust and rely on older players to protect you, while as you grow older, you must choose to protect and care for new baby players. Each passing generation exp…

Kids is the artful new project teased by Double Fine and developer Playables

If the name Playables doesn't ring a bell, you might recognize some of the work of its members, mainly Plug & Play and the co-operative puzzler Drei. Much like those other themed projects and puzzlers, the recently-revealed Kids is an interactive piece of art, aiming to explore the psychology of crowds. Like the aforementioned Plug & Play, Kids will be a short experimental interactive project, using its stark aesthetic and design to delve into themes over twenty to thirty minutes. Not much has been revealed about how the mechanics will work to serve that purpose, but the game's premise describes its structure as moving "with and against crowds until everyone is gone." The cro…

Pocket-Run Pool is an upcoming arcade pool game from Zach Gage, releasing this Thursday

With Really Bad Chess and Flipflop Solitaire, Zach Gage took a familiar game and created something addicting and unique with a simple variation on the formula. That approach continues when Pocket-Run Pool releases later this week, adding an high-scoring arcade touch to pool. In Pocket-Run Pool, each pocketed ball causes the score multiplier of the holes to shift around the table, while misses and scratches cost you a life; these rules promise a precise physics-based puzzler where every sink must be carefully planned and precisely placed. Unlike many other pool games, Pocket-Run Pool is designed with single player in mind, with a focus on encouraging skillfully angled shots to earn th…

The hero of Let Them Come has the right idea for when you’re trapped in a shadow facility ovverun by hordes of ravenous alien horrors. Skylanders Battlegrounds is free on the App Store

Skylanders Battlegrounds - Activision's iOS version of its hugely Skylanders franchise - is currently free on the App Store. This iOS interpretation of Skylanders’s uses a mix of turn-based movement and real-time combat. A hex-based grid provides an overworld map, letting you move one hexagon at a time through the world. Landing on a hexagon either opens a chest to net you gems, or begins a battle dumping you into the game’s battle system. In combat you simply trace a line from your Skylander towards enemies to engage them. Its a simple system, but thanks to the interesting characters and their range of attacks there is enough to keep younger players happy. The real focus of…
