Minimalist puzzler Bloki brings spatial challenges to iOS and Android when it releases next month

Blocki looks to be an intriguing absract puzzle game slated for release on mobile in May, presenting block stacking and molding mechanics in its recent teaser trailer. Your goal is to build a structure from different colored blocks, twisting and turning, shrink and expanding the shape to create a design that connects with a formation of like-colored prisms. Flipping into position and then shifting blocks around looks to be a unique challenge compared to similar games, and future stages will add to the difficulty with color-switching tiles and obstactles to deal with. While the mechanics look like they might be tricky to grasp, Blocki promises to be a game in the zen pacing category of puz…

Letters become puzzle pieces in minimalist physics puzzler Supertype

Kamibox has been releasing an array of clever minimalist puzzlers over the last few years, between Zip-Zap, Cmplt, and others, and that trend looks to continue with the reveal of Supertype. The letter-based puzzler might also be the developer's most unique concept yet. Visually, Supertype may seem similar to games like Super Sharp and Sugar Sugar - manipulating objects to reach certain collectibles on each stage - but mechanically, its alphabet system looks wholly original. Rather than dragging blocks or slicking shapes and ropes, Supertype asks you to type letters onto the stage, which then physically interact with the environment. As demonstrated by the trailer, narrow Ls fall through g…

Hidden Gem of the Week: Dark Echo

Many horror games rely on jump scares and creepy atmosphere, but the stealth/horror/puzzle hybrid Dark Echo takes a different approach, instead conjuring horror from the unknown and unseen, through minimalist visuals and immersive audio. While other mobile games like Papa Sangre and The Nightjar have delivered gameplay through sound, Dark Echo melds visuals with sound; every level starts out with a black screen, your white footprints the only color amid the surrounding dark. Move forward and lines emanate in all directions, the sound of your footsteps visualized, bouncing off the walls and revealing the environment. Without sound, you are blind. Your goal is simply to find the exit. Howev…

Dissembler offers a colorful twist on the matching puzzler, available on iOS

Ian MacLarty’s past games like Boson X and Black Hole Joyrider have all taken uniquely different angles on the runner genre, whether it’s the former‘s rotating gauntlets or Joyrider’s limited-fuel races. His newest iOS title, Dissembler, shifts from hectic arcade action to colorful minimalist puzzles, but maintains the trend of taking a different approach with its genre. At its core, Dissembler is a matching puzzler, challenging you to shift tiles and match colors. But rather than new tiles appearing or the goal of a high score, Dissembler presens you with over a hundred single-screen collages and asks you to break down the design tile-by-tile, until none remain. T…

Wayout is a clever minimalist puzzler heading to iOS and Android on January 25th

A minimalist puzzler offers a unique kind of satisfication - not too complex as to be overwhelming, while being simple and distilled without being too easy - and Wayout looks like it'll be a promising addition to that category when it releases on the 25th. Befitting its subgenre, Wayout's premise is a simple one: every stage presents you with a grid of white and different colored tiles, your job is to make the entire grid devoid of color. Tapping a tile affects the color of surrounding tiles in various ways depending on color and marking; some change colors in specific patterns, or only activiate specific tiles, or change certain colors. It's through blending togethers this array of mecha…

6 brilliantly minimalist iOS games you have to play

With all the immense power of our newest smartphones, it's easy to forget that minimalist games can look just as stunning as games which push your phones to the limit. There's a certain elegance in using bold colors and clean lines to convey an engaging concept.
