1001 Attempts Review

1001 Attempts Review

I know what you're all thinking, and no, I don't have an answer to what happens when you've hit one thousand and one attempts at 1001 Attempts. Even with the amount of restarts, our time spent with the game was nowhere near that amount. It probably is only an answer for the most dedicated players... or more likely, perhaps it's just a catchy name for a 'how long can you last?' style arcade game. You control a little purple... thing, and your goal is to avoid death while trapped in thi…

Gravity.Duck Review

Review Ravenous Games Inc. By Dave Flodine, 11 years, 9 months ago
Gravity.Duck Review

It isn't often that the motivation for your character is just plain greed. The last time we played as a greedy duck was back on the NES in Ducktales. In Gravity Duck, you are after a golden idol in each level, possibly because its innumerable wealth could buy all the pieces of bread this duck could ever desire. Regardless, the way towards you goal is fraught with peril, but as luck (and the game mechanics) would have it, you have the power to flip gravity on your side! Not just flip it…

Dream Tim

Dream Tim

No, that's not a typo, it's the name of a new runner game coming out to the App Store on March 6th. This one boasts story progression through mission completion, interesting power-ups in the form of potions, and a swipe mechanic to destroy enemies as you're running along. Take a look at the trailer.…

The Other Brothers

The Other Brothers

The Other Brothers is a platformer that was embroiled in a bit of legal trouble last year, and it missed its 2012 release date. Well it looks like the project is alive and well, and is slated for a March release. Visually, it uses a similar art style to Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP, and looks to provide some unique platforming experience. Have a look at the trailer.…

Gemini Rue due out for iOS this Spring

I only discovered developer Wadjet Eye Games last year, and through 2012, i played through Gemini Rue and their Blackwell series (and I have plans to play Resonance soon). They make fantastic adventure games, and now Gemini Rue is being ported to iOS. Here's the original trailer of the game. Gemini Rue is a fantastic sci-fi tale set in a hostile and corrupt galaxy. Adventure game fans should really enjoy this one, and we'll let you know when it's released.…

Power Tower mixes Poker with Match 3

Power Tower mixes Poker with Match 3

The trailer of this game asks if you've ever dreamed of mixing poker with a match-3 game. There has to be someone out there who has right? Well they're going to be really happy with the release of Poker Tower this Thursday on the App Store. Not only is it an interesting idea, trying to match poker hands in this fashion, but the low-fi graphics make it look like it's either on the original GameBoy or one of those portable LCD single game systems. Have a look at the trailer.…

Cyto Review

Review EA Chillingo By Dave Flodine, 11 years, 9 months ago
Cyto Review

Editor's Note: While playing Cyto for the video record I noticed the iPhone 5 build did indeed have an aiming arc - it's quite possible older generation iOS devices may not be displaying the arc as either a bug or due to performance issues. Ah, the amnesiac; a video game trope that has lasted the ages and no doubt will be with us until the end of the art form. Cyto is a weird little rubber ball or cell looking creature that wakes up in a strange world not knowing who he is. Not only d…

Sporos Review

Review Appxplore (iCandy) By Dave Flodine, 11 years, 9 months ago
Sporos Review

Infection as a puzzle mechanic; that's what I think of when I play Sporos. This isn't a new concept mind you. Last year's Tentacle Wars comes to mind, but there's something about covering cells using the microscopic entity known as the sporos that I find equally parts engaging and creepy. To extend that factor, this game both contains a laboratory for essential infection and experimental. Now that game never actually states what the sporos is or what you're doing, so I'll stick with my…

Ultima Forever Teaser Trailer

News By Dave Flodine, 11 years, 9 months ago
Ultima Forever Teaser Trailer

I am torn on this one. The Ultima franchise is responsible for so much in the Western RPG genre, and captivated the imaginations of innumerable gamers growing up in the 80s and 90s. Sadly like most franchises, a couple less than stellar entries made the continuation of the series less profitable and it quietly left in the night (if you don't count the MMO which pretty much was the blueprint for that genre as well). Well now slated for a Quarter Two release this year is Ultima Forever. Here's a teaser trailer. On one hand, Mythic is a studio with a great track record, and the game has a classic Western RPG look to it. On the other hand, EA's business practises have been less than stel…

Gravity Duck Defying Physics this week

Gravity Duck Defying Physics this week

Ravenous Games, best known for the League of Evil series has a reputation for delivering precise platforming experiences to the iPhone. This week they're releasing Gravity Duck, whose main control method to get around each level is to change gravity to fly through hazards. It looks like an extension of the gameplay present in VVVVVV. Have a look at the trailer! I'll be looking forward to this one, and as long as it controls smoothly, i foresee having a lot of fun with the title.…

A Game for Fans of Star Wars and Pinball

Star Wars Pinball Boba Fett is hitting the App Store this week. Those who want to relive the key movie moments of Boba Fett while juggling multi-ball and shooting up ramps, this game will be right up your alley. The trailer makes it look a little cinematic in places, but that might just mean more amusement as you're chasing that high score. Have a look for yourselves.…

Bipolar Review

Review Mike Colussi By Dave Flodine, 11 years, 9 months ago
Bipolar Review

Now now, before anyone gets into an uproar, this is not a puzzle game based around the medical disorder. It's more like... well, do you know those chess puzzles in the newspaper that have a pre-set amount of pieces and you have to figure out how to checkmate in a certain number of moves? This is like that with the board game Othello... only not really. Each horizontal row needs to be the same color, and to make that happen, you draw a line across tiles with your finger so that when you…

Worm Run Review

Worm Run Review

You are Zeke Tallahassee, space janitor. It's depressing how many space janitors are lost trying to emulate the exploits of the famed Roger Wilco, but Zeke finds himself fleeing for his life from a gigantic space worm. These are the risks that come with the territory however. Worm Run is an endless runner based around a swiping mechanic, leading Zeke through all manner of twisting cavern full on nooks and crevices. Unfortunately, things are not as smooth as you might think. Swipes are…

DIE HARD Review

DIE HARD Review

Editor's Note: I should have picked up on the incorrect movie title; apologies! Freemium design around the in-app purchase model can be excused. Freemium design around the in-app purchase model of a premium title is pretty abominable, but OK. Freemium design around the in-app purchase model of a premium title that is a movie licensed game, well that's reaching new heights of unbelievability. That's what we have here with Die Hard however. Don't be confused though, it's not based on th…

Towel Fight 2: The Monocle of Destiny

News By Dave Flodine, 11 years, 9 months ago
Towel Fight 2: The Monocle of Destiny

The first thought I had watching the trailer of Towelfight 2 is that the game designers definitely took their inspiration from The Binding of Isaac. This is certainly not a bad thing at all as long as the control allow for fluid movement around these crazy game levels. The whole game has a nice 'we don't take ourselves that seriously' tone, and when the game is released on February 26th, it could prove to be quite enjoyable.…
