Critter Escape Review

Review EA Chillingo By Dave Flodine, 12 years, 3 months ago
Critter Escape Review

Isn't it always the way. You're some weird anthropomorphic creature minding your own business chasing butterflies in a field, when you're captured by scientists and probed for study, only to have to sneak and attack your way to freedom. Critter Escape is a line drawing sneak game, popularized by such titles as Spy Mouse, in which you must draw a line to move your critter around the guards and to the exit. What this title brings to the table are challenge based stars, a host of interest…

App Wrap Up (Weekend Edition, 20th August 2012)

How are you all enjoying your Monday? Wow, what an unenthusiastic response. Well i don't really blame you, but perhaps having a look at some intertesting iPhone games might cheep you up a little. As always we're basing our impressions on the trailer only. We don't know if the game's hold up on their own, but if you decide to give one of these a try, please let us know what you think in the comments. All right, let's get to it! The Dizzy Dragon (Rebel Dwarf SA) Guide the dragon towards the sun, and avoid all the other obstacles. I guess dragons don't have the problem that Icarus had, huh? It looks like controlling the dragon might be a bit of a hassle, or at least that's where the ch…

Explore the Universe with Solar Walk 2.0

We don't often cover educational apps here at Appspy, and that's a shame because all who work here are believers in the power of teaching through interactivity. It's nice once and a while to find such an app that approaches its subject in an accessible, entertaining and informative way. Solar Walk has just recieved its 2.0 update and looks like a fantastic and affordable app to interest and educate on the subject of astronomy. Take a look at this trailer highlighting some of the features. [iPhone link][iPad link]…

Space Inflaters: Popping into the App Store this Thursday

Wow, it looks like Digdug has launched himself into space and is serving up his horrific sense of inflatable justice on some Space Invaders. Watch the trailer to see what i mean. This is a free app with in-app purchases. It looks like it could be a fun shmup, especially with having to pop enemies after shooting them to gain score. Try it out for yourselves after Thursday and let us know what you think!…

Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 Review

Review Tin Man Games By Dave Flodine, 12 years, 3 months ago
Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 Review

We've reviewed a couple gamebooks here at AppSpy before. For those unfamiliar with the genre, think of it as a cross between a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book and an RPG. In fact that's exactly what the Fighting Fantasy series was, having you make choices as you read, but also gaining stats and having to roll dice to get passed tricky situations or to win combat. Tin Man Games have been quite prolific in resurrecting this format digitally for the iPhone and iPad, with most tales being…

Bucketz Review

Review PICNICHIPPO By Dave Flodine, 12 years, 3 months ago
Bucketz Review

Sometimes you just have to admire the level of dedication given to certain aspects of a game. Often it's the attention to detail in the programming, wowing the player with intriguing answers to the question of “hmm, I wonder if I can do this”. In Bucketz however, the dedication is in the level of commitment to the personalities of the characters in game. Not only are they are an amusing lot of sentient buckets with distinct characteristics, but every single level contains i…

Chimpact Review

Review EA Chillingo By Dave Flodine, 12 years, 3 months ago
Chimpact Review

OK. We all know that monkeys love bananas. Did you also know they apparently share our trait for greed when it comes to diamonds? The higher you go in the treetops, the more of these shiny gems are ripe for the taking. That's Chimpact in a nut shell... or should we say banana skin? There are canopies in the canopy the can be flung with your finger to slingshot the simian through each level. Each stage has a linear path with a couple hidden areas ripe with bananas or gems. If you follo…

App Wrap Up (Weekend Edition, 13 August 2012)

Well it's the start of the week and what we have for you is another edition of the App Wrap Up! As always we are evaluating these games based on their trailers, and they have been featured here because something about them looks interesting. If you've played any of these titles, please let everyone know your thoughts down in the comments. Let's do this! Gas Tycoon 3 (LEMICO Soft) A Pipe Dreams style of game with a level editor and easy access share system. It looks like that game has a little bit of style to boot. For those not yet tired of this genre since its resergence on mobile devices, this could be a good pick just based on the breadth of content.[App Store Link] iSpherical -…

App Wrap Up (Week Ending, August 10th 2012)

It's the end of the week and time for the 3rd installment of App Wrap Up. Man, there's just so many games coming out. I guess it's cause everyone is finally gearing up towards the final quarter, which is just game overload for every platform. I guess we can expect to see a lot more of these. As always, we're just posting trailers of games that look like they might have something interesting to offer. Our analysis is based on the trailers. Without further ado, let's begin. Sunshine (Morbidware di Diego Sacchetti) I've played a couple games like this before for review. They're simple 'one touch to jump' platformers that utilise the orbit of planets, kind of like a 2d Super Mario Galax…

Kid Vector Review

Review UNCADE By Dave Flodine, 12 years, 3 months ago
Kid Vector Review

In the last few years, there's been an increase in pixel art as a popular style for games. Some of this is that it can be easier to create, but the most prevalent reason is that it throws back nostalgically to the games of many of our childhoods, and as most of us have found out through our lives, mostly to our dismay, nostalgia can color an experience in a positive way based on its connections to our past, regardless of the experience's overall quality. Kid Vector has taken a differen…

Commando Jack Review

It seems that the tower defense genre has been sort of played out for the last couple of years. Oh yes new games come out that add something interesting to the formula, and games come out that remind us why the genre became so popular to begin with, but it's only in the last year or so we've seen an evolutionary shift in tower defense, and what's more is that this shift is so simple, it's amazing not many developers thought of it before. I am of course talking about allowing the player…

App Wrap Up (Midweek Edition, 8th August 2012)

Yesterday i said we had another app wrap up for you and here we go! Remember as always, we can't speak on the quality of these games, just that they look like they might have something interesting to offer. SoundReaktor (Innovative Labs) A rhythm game dealing with loops, samples and sound effects. Kind of giving you overview over a mixing board, hit the button or buttons at the appropriate time to buld the song and keep it going. Bonus buttons look to add to your overall score. This video is one of many on their channel showcasing a playthrough of particular songs, and there's even freestyle options to just play around.[App Store Link] Roxy Dark and the Spydrs (RPGM) Arachn…

On the Wind Update

On the Wind Update

Back in April, On the Wind was released that took a relaxed approach to the endless runner genre. The first update for the game is now live, and to celebrate, the game has recieved a 50% price drop. The update adds two new modes both catering to those who wished for an easier and more difficult experience. Zen mode is a way to just enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the game without worrying about the challenge, and for those who have mastered the game, EX mode makes things more difficult. If you missed our review, go take a look. On the Wind is a unique experience if nothing else, and well worth a go, especially with the new content and price drop.[App Store Link]…
