Hands-on with Melody Monsters, the musical match-3 from SongHi
We saw a bunch of games during Pocket Gamer Connects, and Melody Monsters was certainly one of the cutest. It's a match-3 puzzler to be sure, and definitely more in the Puzzle & Dragons camp than Candy Crush Saga, plus it's got really great presentation and a nice extras thrown in for good measure. Here's the lowdown.…
Trivia app Reveal 2 comes to iOS and Android on January 31st
Everyone loves a bit of trivia from time to time, and I reckon the reason why is that it's always nice to a) feel smart, and b) boast about being smart. Being one of those people who knows a heck of a lot about a very small number of subjects, on the rare occasions my knowledge of, say, 90s West Coast punk rock acts becomes useful, you're damn right I'm going to shove it in other people's faces. Reveal 2 is a game that'll give you exactly that opportunity. It's free to download and comes with a bunch of different packs on a variety of different subjects to get you started on the road to lording it over your mates. The game's out this coming Saturday the 31st of January on iOS and Android.…
Hands-on with The Detail, the mature crime adventure where every choice counts
We've got our hands on an early build of The Detail, a dark and gritty adventure game that'll be hitting mobiles and tablets soon. Life as a detective solving murder cases is pretty grim, as you'd imagine, but The Detail explores a number of subjects other titles dare to even touch upon. Here's how we got on with The Detail.…
3 brilliant Angry Birds-themed Rube Goldberg machines
If ever there was a game series ripe for the old Rube Goldberg treatment, it's Angry Birds. You've got the tense trial and error fun of physics already built right in to the gameplay, plus a target to be toppled through careful manipulation of the environment. It practically screams Rube Goldberg, does Rovio's bird-flinger. It's no surprise that other people on the Internet have though the same. Here's the best three captured on video and uploaded to YouTube. Small but perfectly formed I think Logan might be slightly spoiled That's a lot of takes…
9 must-see real life versions of mobile video games, featuring Surgeon Sim, Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, and more
Have you ever finished playing a game and been so into it that you can't stop thinking about it, even in day-to-day life? I have. There was a whole week after playing Assassin's Creed where every rooftop looked like a potential escape route from any angry Borgias I might run into while wondering around Bristol city centre. A bunch of other people clearly have too, as they've gone ahead and created real world versions of some of their favourite games. And these are 9 of the very best... Subway Surfers - A great video, one heck of an ending. Crossy Road - Do not try this at home folks. Angry Birds - This one gets bonus points for being interactive. Clash of Clans - I wouldn't want…
Hands-on with What on Earth!, where Trials meets LittleBigPlanet in a most spectacular fashion
… and if that headline didn't grab your attention, I don't know what will. Traplight Games has combined the world creation of Media Molecule's finest hour with the very best that RedLynx has to offer, and created something unique, something all of its own. I was super excited to see What on Earth! at Pocket Gamer Connects, and I'm really pumped for the soft-launch, which should be available very shortly.…
These are my 7 favourite Crossy Road characters, what are yours?
It's a question as old as time: “what are the best Crossy Road characters ever?” Obviously I already know mine, so I've had a scout around the Everyplay archives to find them and compile this big list of videos of people winning them in the prize machine. But I don't know yours, so make sure to let me know what they are in the comments at the bottom of the page. Dragon - It's mighty, it breathes fire, and it looks awesome... what's not to like? Capybara - They have one of these in Bristol Zoo, and I'm always tempted to jump into its enclosure and hug it. Pew Die Pug - Top marks for being a pug, bonus points for being a very specific pug. Doge - Wow. So Doge. Much…
Crossy Road: here's what 63 goes on the prize machine looks like
One of the things I like about Crossy Road the most is unlocking new characters. Sure the refined Frogger-esque gameplay, and colourful blocky visuals are a big draw too, but it's the thrill of pulling the handle on the prize machine, crossing your fingers, and hoping you get something awesome out of it that's the real appeal to me. Which is why the below video, showing a peep on Everyplay putting 6300 coins into the machine, is super gratifying to those like me with a love for all things Gacha. Not got Crossy Road yet? What are you playing at? Rectify that error right now. [App Store link] [Google Play link] [Amazon Appstore link]…
Crossy Road: here's how to unlock the Crab, Drop Bear, Andy Sum, Matt Hall, and Ben Weatherall
Good old Mark's gone ahead and created a super handy video guide on how to unlock all the new characters from the latest update to Crossy Road. Two new animals are up for grabs - the Crab and Drop Bear - and the developers - Andy Sum, Matt Hall, and Ben Weatherall from Hipster Whale - have gone and chucked themselves in as playable characters too. Here's Mr. Brown to explain how to grab them for yourself. [App Store link] [Google Play link] [Amazon Appstore link]…
Hands-on with Duo, the smart new take on a classic memory game
We saw Duo during Pocket Gamer Connects as part of the Very Big Indie Pitch, and though it's immediately clear that it's based on a classic game format, it's also very well put together and brings new ideas to the mix that should ensure it appeals to younger and more casual players. Here's one of the creators of the game to explain more about Duo, its inspirations, and its fresh new gameplay modes.…
Tiny Realms update brings a whole bunch of smack talk, faster progression for new players
The rather fantastic strategy management game Tiny Realms has been updated to version 1.10.1, bringing with it a very nasty new gameplay upgrade: Taunting. If you manage to get three stars in a battle with a human opponent you can leave a mocking note with them as a parting gift - along with their base lying in ruins, of course. Also new to this update are multiple Starter Packs which will help new players progress through to mid-level content much faster. Here's what's in store... The update is available now, but if you've not grabbed the game yourself yet you can do so via the link below. [App Store link]…
Hands-on with Calvino Noir, the dark and filmic 1930s heist adventure
While Pocket Gamer Connects was generally a light-hearted affair, there was one game that really brought a strong sense of moody darkness to the whole shebang: Calvino Noir. Our pals at Pocket Gamer have written about Calvino Noir before, but this is the first chance us here at AppSpy has had to grab direct footage for you to see this thing in motion. And it was worth the wait, because as you'll see from the video, Calvino Noir is absolutely gorgeous, in its own smoky, sinister, brooding sort of way.…
Sid Meier's Starships is coming to iPad in early 2015, adds more depth to Civilization: Beyond Earth
If you're not up on your PC gaming news, then Civilization: Beyond Earth is a sort of mix of Civilization V and Alpha Centauri that's had a largely positive reception amongst hardcore strategy game enthusiasts. Sid Meier's Starships is coming to iPad (and PC and Mac) and is sounding a bit like a more tactical take on FTL and Out There, but set within the Beyond Earth universe: it's a turn-based tactical space combat game, in which you control a fleet of ships. More than that it'll actually have an impact on the main Beyond Earth game too, if you so desire. How? No idea. What we do know is that you'll explore the universe, protect your colonies, and spread peace throughout the cosmos, as a…
Hands-on with Drift 84, the top-down racer that's just about to slide onto iOS and Android
Drift 84 is all about the drift, as you might expect. Whipping around corners at full tilt, slinging the back end out, and earning bonuses for looking so flipping awesome. It's pretty cool, and after we saw it at Pocket Gamer Connects, we had to bring you this hands-on video.…
We went to Pocket Gamer Connects - AppSpy's Sunday Service
We did pretty much nothing except attend and report on the massive Pocket Gamer Connects in London this week, so that's what we'll be focusing on for the AppSpy Sunday Service. The Big Stories 1. Progress is an amazing WarioWare-esque minigame compilation that you have to play for yourself 2. Tindrops impressed us at the Very Big Indie Pitch with its slick, minimalist design 3. Magic Flute by Mozart meanwhile is an ambitious new puzzler based on an opera 4. Elroy and the Aliens is a wonderfully well animated action game crossed with a point and click adventure 5. Oh and while we were seeing all that lot, the new trailer for Sons of Anarchy got released AppSpy Recommends We've been fa…
