Want an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus this Christmas? Think you might have one but don't want to peek at your presents? Here's how to stop yourself

I can't say for sure what you're hoping to get in your stocking this Christmas, but I'd bet a fair few of you are hoping for an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus from Kris Kringle and co. I know I certainly wouldn't say no to a lovely new iDevice. In the lead up to the gift-ageddon that is the 25th of December, it's only natural to want to sneak a little peek at what's at the foot of the bed, or laying in wait beneath the Christmas tree, but we all know that's very naughty indeed, and only those that have been extremely good this year will likely end up getting one. So instead of risking it, getting caught, and missing out, distract yourself by watching these expectedly slick ads by Apple for the…

Hands-on with Raging Justice, in which I beat up goons, slap about ladies, kick some dogs, and punch in a phone booth or two

Hands-on with Raging Justice, in which I beat up goons, slap about ladies, kick some dogs, and punch in a phone booth or two

I saw this 2D side scrolling brawler when I went to Insomnia a few weeks back, and immediately knew we had to cover it here on AppSpy. It's a Final Fight / Streets of Rage by way of Clayfighter, but with lots more content than those older games, and extremely polished controls linked to loads of different abilities and attacks. Raging Justice is shaping up to be awesome, and is one of my most anticipated games of 2015. Here's what it looks like in motion...…

Hands-on with TimeCube, where you can't control yourself but you can control time

In TimeCube you have to guide the eponymous TimeCube through a series of constantly shifting and moving stages, littered with obstacles. Here's the catch though: you can't control the TimeCube directly. So how do you make it through each level unscathed? By manipulating time itself. Here's my hands-on with this rather wonderful endless action game, you can grab the title for yourself via the link at the bottom of the page. [App Store link]…

12 amazing iPhone and iPad games to play with your family this Christmas

It's Christmas soon, and that often means having all the family round to exchange presents, munch down some mince pies, and maybe quoff a cheeky glass of tipple or three. You may think that this could pose a problem: surely having the relations round will seriously eat into your gaming time? Not necessarily. If you're smart you can sneakily fool your immediate and extended family into burning away the hours playing awesome iOS and Android video games. Here's a big list of some of our favourites. 1. Soccer Physics - Two player fun times for you and a footie-mad relative 2. Skylanders Trap Team - If you're after a meaty adventure to share, you can't go wrong with this 3. World of Tank…

Hands-on with Planet Nam Nam, the gallery shooter where psychotic penguins on motorbikes want you dead

You read that headline correctly: some very intense avian types are out to get you in this first person gallery shooter. Thankfully you have a bunch of different weapons at your disposal to defend yourself with, including futuristic pistols, shotguns, and bazookas. The game's out now, free-to-play, and not half bad looking either. Grab Planet Nam Nam via the links below. [App Store link] [Google Play link]…

Bah! Humbug! 10 top games for Christmas grumps

I love Christmas I do, but I can totally see why it's not for everyone. Pretending to be nice to people you don't know (extended family, for example), eating food you don't like (Christmas Pudding is disgusting), and spending money on presents people don't need (does anyone actually like getting "smellies"?) - it's all a bit much. So just for this article, let's embrace the humbug, and talk about the very best games to stick two fingers up at Christmas 2014. 1. Robots Love Ice Cream - Because yes, robots love ice cream, but do they have the capacity to love Christmas too? Probably not. 2. Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff - Because it's easy to stay out of the Christmas spirit by playing…

Stop everything! You need to watch the karaoke trailer for Office Chair Zombie Attack

Stop everything! You need to watch the karaoke trailer for Office Chair Zombie Attack

In Office Chair Zombie Attack you tilt and twist your device around to line up the crosshairs of your gun and blow zombies to smithereens. The game's presented in a cartoonish 3D, there are lots of enemies and weapons, and leaderboards to compare your shooting skills with your mates. Sounds fun! But the developer - A Small Game - really caught our eye with its 90s karaoke-themed trailer for the title. It's brilliant and silly and you have to watch it right now. Office Chair Zombie Attack comes to iPhone and iPad on the 25th of December.…

'Tis the season for some good old fashioned console gaming. There's nothing quite like firing up the PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo, and getting stuck into some meaty AAA video games. As mobile is such a big thing these days, the console folk have started integrating mobile and tablet companion apps into their titles in an effort to enhance the experience when you can't be at your TV. So if you're lucky enough to be playing the latest Grand Theft Auto, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, or some other huge release from 2014, you should check out the list below to see if a companion app is available. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor The Official Shadow of Mordor Palantir app listens…

12 games to help you ignore your family this holiday season, number 8 may not actually work though

If you're the type of person who likes to squirrel themselves away while the family's over, burying into a bunch of video games to pass the time until the house is empty once more, then I've got a crucial list for you today. Below are the finest examples of mobile games that will keep you entertained while Great Aunt Susie has parked herself in the living room and is refusing to let you use the TV on account of it being “anti-social” or some other reason boring old guffs dream up to stop you doing exactly what you want around Christmas time. 1. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - AppSpy's been playing this for months, and we're still nowhere near the end, so it'll definitely keep yo…

Hands-on with Docking Sequence, the spacefaring endless docker

Docking Sequence is from the same developer what made Air Supply SOS - that very good, very authentic, retro arcade-y title with solid controls. In Docking Sequence we see that the developer has made... uh... well... a very good, very authentic, retro arcade-y title with solid controls. And that's super awesome news if you're after a new skill based endless action game. Docking Sequence has you landing endless numbers of space ships at increasingly dangerous space bases, all with a couple of swipes of a screen, and it's jam-packed with little sci-fi references too. Here's what it looks like; Like what you've seen? Grab it on the App Store for 99c / 69p. [App Store link]…

Hands-on with Dark Fear, the first person, point and click, retro horror adventure... with RPG elements

Hands-on with Dark Fear, the first person, point and click, retro horror adventure... with RPG elements

Dark Fear is exciting stuff, not simply because it's mashing together a whole bunch of different genres. I mean okay, that's definitely a big part of why Dark Fear has me in a froth. Who wouldn't want to play something that's an almighty blend of Riven, Wizardry, and Home? But more than that, Dark Fear has this constant atmosphere of tension and a feeling of unease pervading throughout, whether that's through encounters with enemies that you only scrape through or the gloomy and oppressive world which you need to make your way through. I went hands-on with an early build, here's what the game looks like in motion.…

Our top 10 most watched videos of 2014

We're looking back at 2014 a lot at the moment - it's awards season, after all - and part of that process is seeing what kind of videos were wildly popular on our YouTube channel this past year. Big name games feature heavily in our most watched top 10, with a couple of PC / console ports representing the world of traditional gaming in a major way. But mobile-only or "best on mobile" game reviews, graphic comparisons, and hands-on previews dominate: from massive military shooters, to fluffy but frightening favourites. I wonder if there are any conclusions that could be drawn about you lot that visit AppSpy every day? Except that you're lovely, obvs. BioShock Hands-On Modern Combat 5:…

Cooking Fever's latest update is a bit fishy, Android version coming Q1 2015

Cooking Fever's latest update is a bit fishy, Android version coming Q1 2015

The first time you have sushi, almost without fail, you look like this. But then, after you've tasted its umami deliciousness, you inevitably wind up looking like this. Nordcurrent has just added some fish, rice, and nori delights to Cooking Fever, but this time there's a twist. The new update is a bit different to previous ones (such as the English Breakfast update) as it changes up the gameplay to better represent the creative process behind throwing together a bit of Maki. You need to select the right ingredients, roll said ingredients together, and ensure the finished product is stored correctly, before serving them to hungry customers. If you're an Android gamer then you'll also be…
