Second Star Wars: Galactic Defense developer diary reveals more game features

DeNA Games has popped over the latest developer diary video for its new tower defence game - Star Wars: Galactic Defense. If you missed it, you can catch up on part 1 here, but this new video focuses on covering some of the gameplay elements. Tower types, special abilities, customisation, and hints at some of the 90 different units you'll face are all shown, plus there's a bit where the nice man tells us that "characters are one of the most important elements in the game". Fantastic! Star Wars: Galactic Defense will be available as a free-to-play title shortly, on both iOS and Android.…

Genre Busters: top 5 best Halloween game updates on iOS

Each and every year games developers create updates for their games that reflect the various holiday seasons. Halloween is obviously no exception, with all manner of ghoulish additions made to the core gameplay of some of the most popular titles on mobiles. This year Danny and myself have steeled ourselves and have taken a look at the five we think might well be the best. Too creeped out to watch the whole thing? Here are links to the five games in the stream. 1. Crazy Taxi: City Rush2. Badland3. Jack B. Nimble4. Respawnables5. Fruit Ninja…

Disc is 'a simple game for smart people', and it's out right now on iOS

You read that right smarty-pants who like straightforward video games: according to its creator, Disc is the game for you. This iPhone and iPad game from Tapush asks you to connect two discs of the same shade to create one much darker disc. Eventually you'll make grey discs, which score you points when you put them next to one another. Here's the trailer, clever clogs. Disc is out now and costs $0.99 / £0.69, with no IAPs. Below is the link to grab it from the Apple App Store. [App Store link]…

DomiNations is a highly detailed looking strategy game coming to iOS and Android next year

DomiNations is a highly detailed looking strategy game coming to iOS and Android next year

There's a new trailer doing the rounds for the first title to come out of Big Huge Games and Nexon's recent partnership - DomiNations. I'm in two minds about it. On the one hand there's a danger that it could turn out to be just another strategy management game in the mould of Clash of Clans or Tiny Realms or Plunder Pirates. In which case that's fine, but there's not an awful lot to get excited about. While on the other hand, the sheer scope and size of DomiNations' planned gameplay is really quite impressive, suggesting an unprecedented level of detail, and countless upgrade paths. The game plonks you in control of a nation in the Stone Age, and it's your job to take them into the…

Target Acquired takes a Buster Shot at Kickstarter, game is being worked on by Square Enix and Capcom talent

Target Acquired is a combination of an auto-runner like Canabalt, and a shooter like Mega Man, which sounds like a pretty good combination to me. Through the development process the developer TouchTen has had the creative input of Ryo Teruya (one-time CEO at Square Enix), but perhaps more important for that Mega Man feel is that it's also got a soundtrack composed by Manami Matsumae (a veteran Mega Man composer, as well as having worked on Contra and Derby Stallion). TouchTen is launching its Kickstarter campaign today to help get it funded. Here's the video. Feel like backing the project? Pop over to the Kickstarter page.…

Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is out right now, here's everything you need to know

We've just had word from HeroCraft that Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is now available globally. AppSpy has covered the game intensely since it was announced in August 2013, all the way up to the release date being confirmed last week. For those that missed some of our coverage though, here's what to expect... There's a huge single player campaign in which you fight the minions of Chaos - The Word Bearers, to be exact - across the galaxy, in turn-based combat. A big wodge of this solo stuff can be seen in the dedicated stream we ran. Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is free-to-play, meaning you'll both earn and potentially purchase the cards you add to a customisable and fully upgradable deck…

Surviving in Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Episode 8 - Shear Delight

After a one week hiatus, our Let's Play of Minecraft: PE is back for another round, and this time I've brought some Shears with me. Sheep get shorn, ducks lay eggs, and Creepers attempt to gang up on me - it's a very nature-filled episode come to think of it. But there's also a lot more work that's put into our second mine, all sorts of wood gets chucked, and a new escape hatch is built for emergencies. Also: flooding! Missed out on previous episodes? Catch up via our Playlist on YouTube.…

Hands-on with SimCity BuildIt, the excellent free-to-play SimCity game currently in soft-launch

I spent much of my weekend playing SimCity BuildIt, EA's new free-to-play building game, and though I was prepared for the worst, I was quietly hoping for this take on the classic series would be pretty good. And I wasn't disappointed, as the soft-launch version of the game is a lovely bit of work. It's a bit FarmVille, and a bit SimCity, and that makes for a very pleasant combination of freemium and old school. Plus the presentation's great too.…

The launch trailer for Space Forest Dilemma features Tetris and Arkanoid style gameplay plus psychedelic animals

The Android version of Space Forest Dilemma is already out - our pals at Android Rundown reviewed it here. However, the game's coming to iOS on November 6th, so the team at PapaQuark has prepared a brand new launch trailer. Space Forest Dilemma is a free-to-play spatial puzzler with a plain look and a simple premise, but there are some very sharp controls and devious puzzles in here too. Can't wait until November 6th for the iOS version? Grab the Android outing on the link below. [Google Play link]…

Hands-on with Drift'N'Drive, the top down arcade racer with four person local splitscreen multiplayer

Hands-on with Drift'N'Drive, the top down arcade racer with four person local splitscreen multiplayer

You remember that multiplayer racing game I showed you the trailer of last week? Well I've only gone ahead and nabbed myself an early build of the game - titled Drift'N'Drive - to bring you a sneak peek at its arcade loveliness. Because yes, Drift'N'Drive is very lovely indeed. It's a very old school, top-down arcade racing experience, and it greatly reminds me of games like F1 Circus on the PC Engine, or perhaps Micro Machines on the Super Nintendo but with a slightly more realistic setting. Here's the game in motion.…

Hip to be square? Spectrum is out right now, and this is what it looks like

Your task in Spectrum is to swipe on the screen to move a cube, which means you'll hopefully avoid lines of cubes from smashing into you. The idea is basic, but the presentation is just smashing, with an epic and almost 80s sounding soundtrack, plus razor sharp visuals. Spectrum is out right now, here's the trailer. Fancy a go? Spectrum is free and available on the links below. [App Store link][Google Play link]  …

Super early footage of Lynn and the Spirits of Inao shows off the Studio Ghibli-esque presentation and Metroidvania gameplay

French outfit Bloomylight Studio has announced Lynn and the Spirits of Inao, a game which they're hoping will be a perfect combination of Princess Mononoke and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Now that is a very tall order. But from the alpha footage we've seen (which you can see below), it appears the team is on the right track. A gorgeous anime-influenced aesthetic, lots of fast action, puzzle and exploration elements, and that soundtrack... oh man... that soundtrack is giving me goosebumps already. The team is planning to release the game around October of 2015 on both iOS and Android (and PC, Mac, and Wii U). AppSpy's going to keep tabs on Lynn and the Spirits of Inao, we suggest…

Catch zombies and turn them into food for humans in Zombie Catchers, out this week

Two Men and a Dog's first game has been in development for 12 months, and we've been eager to play more ever since we discovered it at PG Connects. Now it's finally ready for public consumption: Zombie Catchers is hitting iOS this week. The game will be released on October 30th and stars a menacing alien chap running around trying to capture zombies, then turning those zombies into fast food for human beings to consume. I'm betting that Zombie Catchers is going to be a bit of a hit, so take a look at the gameplay trailer now to see what's in-store.…

A sleepy start - AppSpy's Sunday Service

It's AppSpy's Sunday Service, a short dose of mobile and tablet gaming to kick off your Sunday. The Big Stories 1. Record of Agarest War Zero is on Android and it's stuffed tight with features. 2. We have exclusive Booster Pack codes for Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf. 3. James really doesn't like Linkin Park, and most games by bands are a bit pants. 4. The man in this trailer has the gruffest voice I've ever heard. It's amazing. 5. Butters from South Park has his very own pinball table and that's obviously fantastic news. AppSpy Recommends The game that pleasantly surprised the AppSpy team the most this week was Sleep Attack TD. The tower defence genre is such a well worn path now…

Learn how to play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite with AppSpy - Part 16

If I was going to give these episodes subtitles, then I would call this entry in our Let's Play archive “Turning Point”. Myself, that James, and that Danny team up for a stupendous hour of creature killing: tearing through each challenge as if it were naught. Plus a load of our regular stream Spies joined us on the hunts too. Best episode ever? Possibly. Want to see the previous 15 hours of our time with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite? Of course you do.…
